I used to have a microwave that you could stop at 0 if you hit the right time. Before the finish beeps but still at 0. It was like a frame perfect press though, really hard to get.

Also at my work there’s someone who likes to leave it at 0:01. When I come in in the morning and it displays that I don’t know the time. Gr. Use the little red button kthx

Any sound output should always, always have a volume control or on/off toggle. Sound is very subjective.

My current one insists on beeping exactly 3 times whether I open the door or not. Fucking annoying. 30 y/o one at my dad’s doesn’t and it makes it a 1000x better device

I’ve said it before, but they should have a time out option of say like 5 or 10 minutes, when it automatically goes back to standby.

Our new one has the option to not have a clock and just be blank so it’s extra annoying when somebody leaves the timer on and the screen stays on blinking ‘cook time’.

Mine does too but even though it (and my oven) tell the time I look at my watch, phone, or the dedicated clock in my living room

            • I don’t wear a watch, especially not while I’m busy in the kitchen
            • My phone is usually on my pocket, and it’s easier to just turn my head than to reach into my pocket, pull out my phone, and turn it on. And also wash my hands if, again, I’m doing kitchen stuff in the kitchen.
            • The microwave is in the kitchen, which is a different room than the living room.

it’s not just about the microwave returning to clock function. It’s also about the microwave being returned to it’s normal standby state so that pushing the buttons functions as expected for the next person.

I turned off all sounds on my microwave and surprisingly it’s really disorienting. Not having the aural feedback on the buttons pissed off everyone.

My previous microwave oven had a mute button. That thing stayed permanently silent. Unfortunately I have never found a new model that can be muted.

Cue a Technology Connection video about how old microwave ovens were better.

I just can’t wait for microwave to have an integration with AI. I just need another internet connected device that can recommend a nice laxative after scanning what it just cooked. Not only that but it could integrate with my smart fridge and make sure that it orders food that is just about to expire from Instacart. And with its partnership with Doordash, the microwave could just stop working and order a replacement meal for me.

      …said no one ever.

Many if not most microwaves can be muted, but they usually don’t have a special button for it.

It’s often some secret button combination. READ YOUR MICROWAVE’S MANUAL.

I’ve got a newer (5yo) Maytag that has a silent mode that you can choose either with end beep or without. It resets every power outage which is my only gripe.

I hate it when people leave time on the microwave like this. It annoys me to no end, much more than the beep.

Mine doesn’t have a way to disable the beep so I opened up the case and de-beeped it by desoldering the piezo.
