It was sunny out, so I decided to do get some yardwork done. The video doesn’t do justice to just how thick and tall the grass is; well over 3 foot tall in many places, with saplings starting to take root. A 6-foot wide path involves a lot of cutting!

I have an old super Rusty scythe and every time I think about using it I also think about the constant resharpening.

Carry the stone in your belt or waistband (holders are just a few bucks if you don’t have one) - takes 10 seconds every couple minutes of work, and gives you a chance to catch your breath regardless. :D

Cool to see a scythe being used! Your backyard looks like a strange layout. Is that a dividing fence with planks missing, and a neighbor’s house in the background?

Yep, pretty much. The fence was already falling apart, so a while back I kicked out a couple planks so that I could move dirt more easily from the alley into the yard - both fill dirt for greenhouse construction (out of picture to the left) and topsoil for the raised beds I built inside it.

      Shed, apple trees, alley, neighbors.

Does your apple tree produce? I can’t grow apples in my zone very well, and my other fruit producers don’t seem happy lately.

So many apples. So many apples. Last year I picked probably three bushels off the two trees, and picked up another couple off the ground into my compost pile - before the rains started and the rest went to mush in the grass.

So many apples you wouldn’t believe it. These are great old grandmother trees.

Doing garden work topless should be normalized for men and women! Must be nice to feel the breeze on your skin to cool you off.

If you were my neighbor and I saw this I sure wouldn’t complain. I might get a bit too shy to say hi though…

I finally figured out what was wrong, for the record - my blade had slipped, it was maybe 15 degrees off-angle. Was definitely fighting with the tool in this video!

This morning I fixed that and did a row twice the width with half the effort. Sharp = good, but right angle snath->blade = vital.
