Some things for me: marmite + jam on toast together, and name etymology
Spending time being out of reach. The power button is by far my favorite on my phone.
Data privacy.
It is so important to understand the basics at least.
Imagine a not-so-far future where you buy some sweets for your neighbor’s children, and after a while, after somebody has found the remains of the packaging of these sweets somewhere in a streets’s corner, you get a summons to court because they can prove that you were the buyer of this.
The amount of times I heard ‘I have nothing to hide’…
The only correct answer to that is ‘show us your cock, then’.
I was gonna say data privacy as well.
In the US, almost anyone can walk to the end of their driveway (or some other, similarly close location) and put an envelope in a box. In a matter of days, that envelope can be in any other box at the end of anyone else’s driveway in the US, for less than the cost of a bottle of water.
Most US Americans have no idea how good they have it with the USPS.
Similarly, the investigative arm of the Post Office, the USPIS, is arguably the most powerful agency of the US government, as there are virtually no laws limiting their authority to investigate.
Pigeons.
We domesticated them and then just discarded them once they were no longer “useful” to us. Now people see them as “sky rats” and are generally pretty shit towards them.
I think they are one of the best birds!
Yeah, they’re pretty neat, what with the GPS and all :-)
Rock Doves
Have you seen that youtuber/tiktoker who has the pet pigeon? flatwavelength
Fun content.
When i hear about how usefuo they were in the past i’m always trying to re-domesticste them.
Fun pigeon fact: they can be trained to distinguish MRI scans of people with cancer from ones that don’t have cancer.
I haven’t but will check it out, thanks for the recommendation. I also didn’t know that about the MRI scans.
I will feed them at any opportunity and always have fresh water in my garden available for them (and the other birds).
How ball point pens work. Like a little roll-on deoderant.
Plus the retractable ones. Such a neat little mechanism :-)
I like how ball-jointed water faucets work too, which seems similar to me.
Oh my dog yes, playing with one of those in the store, when you can see the ball rotate … the tight fit, the smooth motion …
It’s almost sexual.
Brass pipe fittings that fit together really well, too. Gotta make sure they’re nice and tight.
I don’t mean to be rude but I tried marmite the other day for the first time on a dare and I almost puked. 😥
It’s fucking disgusting. I honestly do not understand how anyone could learn to like that taste.
It’s fine. I might just be a broken person
It’s okay, some people like licorice, we all have our defects. 😅
I can almost guarantee you used too much. It’s a concentrate.
That life is priceless
Mine is worthless. Close enough
Knowing exactly where and when to cite a source; what makes for a good one; and then doing it well.
As I learned in college; cite everything.
I like how so many things are improving and life is really mind-boggling better and more convenient and nicer than it was 20-30 years ago. Food, healthcare, access to knowledge, etc.
But you can’t say this that without massive massive blowback, because everyone is convinced of this doomer narrative that everything is worse and getting worse by the day. Like, ok doomer, please ignore all the massive progress. No, let’s act like the world is awful and terrible because Netlifx raised their prices $1 per month. it’s absurd.
God this is so true. I laugh at the idiots who claim washing machines, cars, TVs etc were all better back in the day.
They might have physically lasted longer but weren’t nearly as efficient or safe as their modern counterparts.
I’m on board with you. Yes, some things are a bit worse, but most things are the total opposite. All I see online anymore are doomers and I just don’t have that mindset anymore. Makes most of the internet (Lemmy in particular) unrelatable.
Lol I think the downvotes show thst you’re definitely the best at appreciating this.
I think you’re right. Life is getting better, science and tech wise, npbut it might be getting stupider too (e.g managers jump the gun in firing someone because they assume a public LLM service will do the job just as well)
Lastase pills. Some people don’t know it’s a thing. I wouldn’t be able to eat so many good food like butter, poutine, cheesecake, yoghurt, nachos… I know there are alternatives but they are not the same as the real thing.
*Lactase just in case anyone wants to find it.
Hot water on tap. Refrigeration including air conditioning. Laundry machines. Bread. Beer. Fresh Air. The Sun!
Not having a car with its insurance, repair, fuel etc…
The transistor
Fountain pens.
Closeness with friends. You don’t appreciate it until suddenly they’re gone unexpectedly (for one reason or another - but just death).
