She is, of course, taking a stance counter to the misogynist xenophobe who would at least concede that women have a (misguided) political will. Because even they might have said that they were chasing (a particular type of) boys of a certain political ideology they agreed with. That might end up calculating out to be less infantalizing than Steinem’s quote.
The presidency is not a prestige position and a woman is not an interchangeable entity. I’m sorry about your first woman president; I wish she didn’t SUCK AND KILL PEOPLE.

Edit: as an aside, I think this sorta shit proves how black feminists & other black thinkers (Crenshaw, Davis, Lorde, etc) who were contemporaries of Steinam had the right idea about the mainstream brand of white feminism (headed by white thinkers, predominantly concerned with and comprised of white people) as being concerned with womens rights insofar as they protect the class interests of white women and improve their position in the social hierarchy while often ignoring issues faced by women of color.
It’s essentially the same as the wealthy English Suffragettes. The main leaders of that went on to become fascists because they weren’t actually interested in equality, they just wanted to move up the social hierarchy
Instead of smashing the glass ceiling, they wanted to be on the other side if it looking down.

when i think of the word “icon” i think of a little graphical file that doesn’t do anything, but can be easily confused with a functional application due to its proximity.
