Like i just pay for this on my computer once and then i get mailed a little glossy full colour A4 booklet with loads of interviews and articles and opinion pieces all about my interests in it once a month for the next year? I get to leaf through it while drinking coffee in the morning and then put it down after reading a few articles and they’re all written by professional writers not just substack cranks?
I haven’t gotten magazines regularly since i was a kid and that was just like the Beano’s swansong in the few years before it finally went bankrupt and stopped distribution, so this is all a big novelty to me. Please forgive my wide-eyed zoomer naïvety about this all, but i don’t get how millenials were ever persuaded to give this up for web articles.
(I also got a free tote bag included with my subscription!!! I didn’t even know they did that, they just mailed me a bag along with my magazine one day!)

I recently retrieved all my old OPMs from back home and started re-reading them and boy are they, uh…of their time. Incredible time capsules, some fascinating articles and coverage for sure, but like unlimited misogyny.

I subscribe to a local computer/gaming magazine that’s made by volunteers. It might only have four issues per year, but it’s still cool to have a physical magazine in this day and age.
I really miss physical magazines! I still keep some from when I was a kid. I also have some music magazines from my teen angst days. In Morocco we only have access to some French magazines so I used to read those, especially French science magazines. There were also some daring political magazines in Arabic/Moroccan ten years ago or so but the regime closed them down and the journalists just run away to Europe. I wish I could get some English language stuff with niche interests but the shipping prices will be astronomical
My grandparents used to get me a national geographic sub every year for Christmas and it was the best.
I wanna subscribe to Nat Geo but they’re owned by Disney now and I’m a little wary of having my data harvested and sold
Sadly nat geo has also gone down in quality significantly since the acquisition by Murdoch years ago. It was all photojournalism before but now every cover story is about Jesus or some other history channel bullshit.
Oof yeah that sucks. Can always shoplift them from a Barnes and noble or whatever corpo book store is near you. Magazines are incredibly easy to steal.
Barnes and Noble has shredder trucks that come by to obliterate any out of date magazines so that no one can read them. At least they did back in '23. Lifting them is objectively the moral thing to do.
Stealing from corporations is always moral.
I still have all the NatGeos a friend of the family got me subscribed to when I was a kid. I read the 3D Mars Rover issue so many times the spine fell apart.

The Monthly Review is kind of dry, but it’s theory delivered right to you every month.
yeah i like it and its legacy is cool. i have been considering subscribing to new left review as well but it’s quite a bit more expensive so maybe some point in the future i will
I wish that Cooks Illustrated had a vegetarian/vegan edition alongside their regular one, so its mostly useless to me now. If thats not an issue for you then I can highly, HIGHLY reccomend. Theres only a handful of recipes per issue but theyre all well-tested and the rest of the periodical is stuff like essays on food, reviews of stuff, and tips on techniques.
I miss getting those.

They do have a couple vegetarian cookbooks that have a lot of vegan recipies, and those are great but they are not magazines.

BFI: Sight and Sound, it was £50 for a years subscription + tote bag and back access to online copies of every edition since it started in the 30s
I signed up for the local communist newspaper (they’re not trots, but they’re not really radical either. Classic post 68 euro “communists” who at least call Gaza a genocide), and it feels so great to just read the news there and feel like you’re done for the day.
Plus, I get Le Monde Diplomatique every month, and it rules.
It’s like a slice of life pre-internet, when you used to have to purchase hobby magazines to get the latest news on whatever tickled your fancy.
It all feels very vintage and cool
