BuT rEmEmBeR rAe DaYs?!?!? Says every brainwashed turd who lived through the 90s.
Rae’s strategy for dealing with the crash was so successful it has been studied and adopted by governments around the world. But Ontario still hates him for it. This place sucks.
I don’t. What’s Rae Days?
It was a strategy used to keep govt employees employed rather than face layoffs. The trade off was that they would work fewer days and get paid for days worked. Everyone was up in arms over these “Rae days” off for the government. The alternative being a lot of people would have just straight up lost their jobs. This kept people working and kept things running. But when you talk to people about the NDP the argument always comes back to “ do you want to go through Rae days again? “ the answer is yes if it lets people keep their jobs.
I think the deeper and more founded grievance is that Rae sacrificed private sector unions so he could save the public sector unions.
I’ve honestly never heard this. Would you care to elaborate?
Probably everything I know comes from Steve Paiken interviews. This is a good episode. Steve interviews Rae on the subject. The other half of the episode was a panel discussion about Rae Days etc with people from the era, probably more relevant. (Transcript)
Thanks for the transcript link too! Interesting read, I can completely understand the betrayal there. It’s really unfortunate that Rae would cow-tow to the corporations like that and refuse to increase taxes, while hurting the unions and increasing the publics taxes. Kinda goes against the whole point of their party. An unfortunate symptom of a poor leader, but it shouldn’t haunt the party to this day.
An unfortunate symptom of a poor leader
I’m surprised that is your conclusion. Ontario’s outcomes were among the best. We might have rather different compromises were made, but compromises had to be made, no one was going to be happy, and he righted the boat.
Younger people are saying it too and have no idea what/why.
and the worst part … They want to also give that to those people. Can you imagine?

Lol
What I’ve come to realize is every problem is a series of parts that have to combined in a specific way to achieve a desired outcome.
So that’s the whole world and you start with love thy neighbor because they’re in close proximity to you and you can figure out what kind of actor they are in game theory.
Unrelated NPD is an unfortunate abbreviation. It’s the nationalist party of Germany (Nazi party) abbreviation. Or was before rebranding to HEIMAT. Guess that doesn’t matter in Canada, but still.
The German nazy party is the AfD . . .
We have more than one. Here are a few of them.
The AfD is the most successful at this moment:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alternative_for_GermanyThe NPD (renamed to Heimat - Homeland) is more niche:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Die_HeimatAnd we also have the republicans:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Republicans_(Germany)There is apparently still a splinter “NPD” that was worried that Heimat was not going to be nazi enough…
Before the afd there used to be another. They are not the same by a long shot with NPD being (much) further to the right. “Geld für die Oma, statt Sinti und Roma” was on their election posters. This is insanely anti ziganist. They also breached the 5% threshold in select states.
Now that’s a fun fact!
It says NDP, not NPD.
It’s NPD in french. It says it in both languages since this is a Canadian community.
And, in BC, raise the fuck out of my taxes. No thanks!
This tax raise?
Emphasis first:
…a taxpayer with $200,000 in taxable income would pay about $192 more a year.
The proposal lifts the rates on the two highest existing brackets by two percentage points and adds a new top bracket. Taxable income from $190,405 to $265,545 would be taxed at 18.8 per cent, up from 16.8 per cent.
Income from $265,545 to $1 million would move from 20.5 per cent to 22.5 per cent. Income above $1 million would face 24.5 per cent.
Each rate applies only within its bracket. Everyone keeps the current rates on their first $190,405. Daily Hive calculated that a taxpayer with $200,000 in taxable income would pay about $192 more a year.
It would cost me about 5k a year if this tax hike was enacted.
Yes, I am a high income earner.
No, I don’t want to pay more in taxes.
Sure enough, the NDP bankrupted the province… I voted for them, but am not impressed.
I’m sorry, 5k a year? When the legislation is actually taxing people that make 200k+ a year at an additional $192/year.
At $250,000 the increase would be about $1,192, and at $1.5 million about $36,192.
Your claim of 5k additional taxes, then you’re claiming you make about 440k/annual. So current take home is 20,700/month. After new legislation take home would be 20,300/month.
That type of salary puts you in the top 0.5% of income tax filers in Canada. You, allegedly, make more than 99.5% of tax filing Canadians and you don’t want to pay an extra $400/month in tax?
I’m doubting the veracity of what you’re saying.
Fake person is fake. They even said BC is bankrupt. What a maroon, a buffoon even.
I dont much care of you dont believe me, but thats the truth.
Learn a skill. Start a business doing said skill.
Stop leeching off the hard work of your employees.
Just partners at my business, friend! No leeching happening at all.
I don’t believe you!
My friend, it’s not like it bring true even helps your argument. You’re not the victim. You’re the rich person who doesn’t want to marginally pay their fair share.
If you’re worried about that 400/month then you should skip your daily Starbucks matcha latte and avocado toast. Budgeting really helps.
New anonymous accounts spouting conservative rhetoric while saying they voted NDP in the past (all during elections) does not exactly instill trust in what you say.
I don’t expect you to agree with me. I’m merely explaining that this campaign promise of the NDPs has affected my vote. And it’s so funny… my conservative friends call me a liberal shill. The (what appears to so far be somewhat of an intolerant) cesspool here claims I spout conservative rhetoric. In reality, I’m a left leaning centrist who thinks he pays enough in taxes. I know, go figure.
Congratulations on learning that liberals aren’t leftists.
Hopefully you won’t make the relatively small extra taxation the thing that keeps you from voting NDP. There are so many other issues we could try to find common ground on. But if it does, well, that’s your absolute right in a democracy.
We live in a democracy (a flawed one, unfortunately). But it’s your prerogative to vote as you deem suitable and I apologize if I’ve come off harshly - you can see that many people have strong feelings due to how much everyone is currently struggling.
If you feel that a nominal tax increase is your single issue line in the sand, then you do you. Just worth keeping in mind how taxes serve the entire community and that the BC NDP have reduced the balance massively (the opposite of bankrupting). Also worth keeping in mind the many examples of people advocating for less tax, like just south of us, and the mentality/society that follows versus Europe (with way higher taxes and progressive brackets) and their mentality/society.
I’ve lived in many provinces, BC being one of them, and I’ve noted that people in BC take the social and governmental services for granted; where other provinces just give you the finger for those same things.
Imagine living and working in a system that allows you to make so mich more money than you need. And then to be upset at paying less than 1% of it in extra taxes to maintain or improve that system.
‘Give me all of the benefits and non of the responsibility or Ill throw a hissyfit.’ is what it sounds like.
Without those taxes those costs start coming out of pocket to private companies like insurance or health providers or road tolls. Easily eating up the savings of not paying taxes, and then some.
You can afford it, but others can’t. Don’t be a dick. Thats un-Canadian.
The obscene wealth inequality cannot be fixed by haircuts on the somewhat higher earners. It needs taxing the obscene wealth difference, not the income streams. Billionaires’ income streams are not that spectacular; they live off loans backed by their wealth. Does not even count as income. And us plebs are at each other’s throats at a few 10k yearly difference in our incomes. Congratulations to the billies, they played us.
What are you talking about? I pay a ridiculous amount of taxes. I believe last year I sent the CRA nearly $150k.
Accusations of not paying my fair share are contrarian nonsense. And for how much I get back, I certainly feel like I pay my share of the responsibility. Quite frankly, I think I get a bit ripped off. Is it any wonder I don’t want to pay ANOTHER 5k because Eby can’t keep it in his pants? What you think is fair and what we think is fair is really not compatible, sorry.
You need to stop looking at it in terms of absolute dollars paid. And look at it terms of how much you have left after paying for a comfortable level of living, and taxes.
Most people don’t cross the threshold of comfortable, and if they do, they have virtually nothing left for retirement or savings.
A thousand dollars to you isn’t the same as a thousand dollars to someone else.
That’s where a lot of people will claim you aren’t paying your fair share.
Also, blaming the state of the province on one part or one man is really missing a lot of historical context.
Decades of avoiding taxes has led the atrophy in our health care system. Then covid happened. Globally. We weathered it quite well because of the NDP party. It still took its toll. A lof of our aging staff in the health care sector either retired early or burned out due to the undue stress. I think a lot of people are blind to how over stressed the system was during that time.
It’s a delusional pipe dream to think we can fix any of that without taxes on those who can afford it.
Lol you’re arguing paying 150k and that it’s unfair. How many people don’t even see 150k income? Troll and ignored.
Yes, I am a high income earner.
Oh! Then we couldn’t possibly care about your opinions. You’re lucky we’re just trying to tax you, lol.
That sounds an awful lot like a threat. Get a grip, oh enlightened one.
Uhh no its absolutely a promise based on historical analysis. Either pay your fair share or the peasents will chop your head off, lmao.
Not a big fan of history I take it?
Instead of income, wealth should be taxed. Someone may be a relatively high income earner and still not economically safe because they are not coming from generational wealth.
Both ideally.
Account made on Oct 6, 2026…HMMM…just in time for the election huh.
Misleading claims about how NDP ‘bankrupted the province’…sure, sure…16 years of BC lib/con cuts/crown corp guts and sales definitely can be undone in 9 years!..
LOL… ya got me!
BC is in insolvency, someone call CTV news and let them know.
Idiot.
BC isn’t bankrupt at all
Oh no, pay into society to help others? At what cost though? Oh a shaving off my income for benefits that make places safer, give people a better social net etc. Mean that was classic ndp anyways unsure exactly now since been awhile since I checked.
Oh sure I could pay more myself (classic argument of someone saying paying more isn’t terrible as a peronsalble action, not directed to who I’m replying to since no mention was brought up not a dig at them specifically) but the ones that do can’t pay enough, and society for a comfortable life requires more.
Don’t have kids? Well we live in a society that needs kids to be well educated. If anything we should offer free post secondary education to people who can make it through.
Don’t want to help out those with lesser income? Well we live in a society that can help them and their children prosper with some investment, don’t want to help? Don’t live here. Be a part to help encourage growth and education.
Yes taxes suck, but I wouldn’t want to live in a spot without them, potholed roads, crappy education and more homeless, let alone emergency services. How is that a better outcome than us helping those within our borders? Oh your car was broken into? Yes if we had a better social net it it would happen less often but perhaps not for someone personally, it’ll happen cause people are well human.
I also understand that helping everyone doesn’t bring issues down to zero but with well funded programs it’s a good start.
Not that I want to be taxed to hell, but I like the idea of taxes helping directly. And will gladly live in a spot that has programs to help others with my taxes even if costing more.
Weren’t we all taught to help people anyways? Okay government waste etc, but I prefer a party that tries isl.
Hey, you’re right! Let’s just keep raising taxes continuously I guess!
Oh hey let’s use strawman arguments to make our point I guess! Really make a good point or don’t reply.
