  • Yeah I lived a car-free life when I lived in Seattle, working on Magnolia Hill, living on Capitol Hill. That was doable year round. The midwestern flyover states I grew up and live in, tho, no it’s not workable. In the North there’s snow for months, in the South we have monsoon season where it rains for weeks, in the summer heat index gets above 110 regularly and these people don’t plant shade trees. Plus nearest grocery stores are miles away (I live downtown in a capital city).

Even though I work a few blocks from my home, I can’t live car free here without significant ride-sharing expenses (the bus system is a joke and only runs part of the day, grocery shopping would eat an entire day of my week that way), if I did that I couldn’t go on roadtrips on weekends either, unless I rented a car - and all that is more expensive than my (20k, not 40k) car.

But I do love this community and it’s coastal approach to shaming people who rely on cars… take the tram or train, lmao

When every activity has to have at least one round of games in between for that dopamine hit, and waking up at night for it, coming home at work for it, yeah we have a problem. And in that case, boundaries (which can come across as ultimatums) are entirely appropriate.

  • For us it begins at the grassroots. We don’t have billionaires willing to create a national organization. So form small liberal groups, and then network them together. I’m serious. I started a group for queer men last year, now I am taking over the entire progressive scene in my state by creating an overarching organization that connects over a dozen key players (ACLU, Prides, migrant and trans organizations). If we did this in every area, and then networked THEM… well shit we’d have a base of power and even fundraising capabilities. IDK what else to do.

  • The periodic table is predictive. From a few elements, the rest could be projected and expected, like the Higgs-Boson. The table makes no predictions for things we cannot measure and are in fact theoretical, like dark matter which lacks any empirical evidence. Would be awesome if it did because then it wouldn’t be theoretical anymore.
