I’m curious how the servers hold up now that server meshing is out. Will have to jump in later to check.
Good luck to all of us either way.
They had the good sense to schedule server maintenance exactly a day before, this time around.
Even without a hotfix to apply, a fresh reboot of all shards with accompanying purge of assets can go a long way to giving a better first impression of Star citizen.
Did they purge assets with yesterday’s maintenance? I thought part of the server issues steam from the fact that new servers are rebooted to the previously saved state, with all the junk laying around as usual. My session last night didn’t really look like a clean and fresh start at the very least.
One of the notes from Wakapedia was that they were cleaning up the bugged out landing gear that’s leftover from destroyed ships. I’ll see if I can find it.
That would be a welcome sight indeed, these things can be a menace.
Found it:
4.1 LIVE maintenance has begun and is updating all current instances to the latest DGS hotfix while cleaning up stuck entities such as previously bugged landing gears.
Much obliged!
Quadrature’s reply is far more informed than mine.
I only noted a much lower entity count from r_displayinfo 1 than before, which I often check when dealing with server lag and hopping between shards. Admittedly that’s not really indicative of any server cleanup efforts, however. Sorry for any confusion.
No worries, I actually didn’t even think about them manually cleaning up stuck parts of ships as I simply forgot about them - I don’t visit the popular locations and most of the ones I do stop by don’t really have much wrecks around them.
I’m expecting a bit of chaos. Server meshing is great, but there are other backend systems that struggle when we get up to freefly player count numbers.
Most likely inventory issues, ship spawning issues, maybe even broken elevators for those just getting out of their habs… But it will be a good stress test now that things have been (mostly) stable.
Frankly for me during these free fly evets I tend to just not play at all. Too many trolls and cunts hop in and are just brazen assholes to the rest of us who just want to run a bunker mission, mine, salvage, whatever more along the solo/pve side. I accept I’ve probably run into more asshats than others, but after all these years and seemingly getting stung by the streams of stupid that plays freely, now’s the time I’ll just not bother at all. Usually if I rant about this on spectrum/whereever I’ll just receive the ol git gud treatment. Shrugs.
I’ll go touch grass now.
I actually spent some time playing today and the whole experience was pretty wholesome overall. Servers worked fine for the most part, newbies were showered with help, everyone chatted and had a good time. No excessive hostility either (beyond the usual bickering).
Dunno if this will stick through the weekend or the rest of FF but day 1 was a nice surprise.
Oh totally. I don’t expect it to be perfect, I’m just curious how SM and the backend work since its release will affect the usual Free Fly problems.
Haven’t played since Jan 2nd…. And the experience was less than stellar. Is it worth coming back yet?
Yeah, it was rough at the beginning of the year. They’ve definitely fixed up a lot of bugs, but there’s still a long list.
At the very least, the elevator issues that plagued us before are mostly fixed up. The orbital laser platforms are really cool, but it’s a big PVP area.
It’s a lot better compared to the beginning of the year. They also started having occasional maintenance to clean up clutter and apply hotfixes.
Performance-wise it’s running better than before.
Of course, there are still bugs that you’ll need to look out for, but most of the game breaking ones are fixed up, and they made it so we don’t lose equipped gear on death (temporarily, until item recovery is in).

Depends on how you define “scam”. If your definition is so loose that you consider games like No Man’s Sky to be a scam at the time it first released, then sure.
They’ve continued to release updates and there’s a free fly happening right now. You’re welcome to check it out for yourself to see how far along they are now.
