I dread flying. But as I was preparing to travel to San Francisco for this year’s Game Developers Conference, I had one reason to be excited: It would be my first flight with the Steam Deck. I downloaded several games onto the handheld and gleefully stowed it in my carry-on, right next to my Switch OLED.
That excitement quickly turned to embarrassment thanks to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).
As I reached the front of the airport security line, I pulled my laptop out of my bag as I normally would. I asked the TSA agent standing by if I had to remove any game consoles as well. She asked if I meant the Switch, and looking to avoid a needlessly complicated explanation, I said yes. She told me to remove any systems, so I did. First, I pulled my Switch out of its soft slip case. Then, I pulled out the Steam Deck’s comparatively hulking carrier and flopped the beastly device right next to the Switch. That’s when I noticed a strange, almost suspicious look on the TSA agent’s face.
“That’s a Switch?”
“No, no, this is a new thing.”
“… That’s too big.”That last line, delivered with an incredulous laugh, has stuck with me long since my flight, mostly because she’s right. I couldn’t help but feel a little self-conscious about booting up the device on the plane, the same as I would if I were to take my shoes off during a flight. Sometimes it takes an outside perspective to realize how truly ridiculous gaming hardware is.
I settle into my seat and I pull out my MASSIVE steam deck.
The girl a couple seats over looks over to see what I’m doing with a look of disgust on her face, and then smirks. “Compensating much?”
The kid behind me kicks the chair, then peers over. “He points at me and jeers. “This loser is playing on a FUCKING steam deck!”
The entire plane bursts into laughter. The pilot and copilot leave the cockpit to join in on the fun.
We strike the first tower.
Tagline material
Mr. President, the residents of the second tower are eating beans
Another beanis hit the second tower
I pulled my laptop

Yeah, because you have multiple video game toys in your bag for a trip lol
First they came for my laptop, then they came for my switch, and by the time they came for my steam deck, there were no gamers left to defend it
Real Gs only carry a Nintendo DSi in their pocket and a Pokéwalker on their belt
“… That’s too big.”
Is that a steamdeck in your pants or are you happy to see me
Size does matter
My Switch was not the hit at the rooftop party I was led to believe it would be.
I dunno man, let the dweeb have fun.
No.
We’re not buying FunKey Ss to play “while waiting in the grocery line.” We’re not going to the library to game. We’re not going to pokemon card tournaments to emulate Pokemon Black 2 in the corner. We’re not strapping our monstrosities to airplane seats. We’re not clothes shopping with our wives with a SteamDeck in one of our hands. We’re not bringing a backpack to carry the carrying case for the device.
It ends now.
We’re playing Boktai on real carts and running around trying to catch the sunlight in its solar sensor. We’re Pokemon Going. We’re carrying consoles in our front pants pockets and it doesn’t even look that bad. We’re getting hits on 3DS streetpass.
We’re thriving on actual portable gaming.
We’re not gunna’ go “uh huh. oh yeah. just a sec, this 15 minute final fantasy xiii cutscene just started and i can’t listen to you and it at the same time.”
silly to be this mad about the deck.
I’m fucking steaming about the steamdeck. So mad.
Steamin’ bout’ that deck
“[It’s big?] I know, right? Haha” and the situation resolves. Even if it doesn’t: “you ever hear of the steam deck? It’s like a big Switch” AND EVEN IF IT DOESN’T END THEN: “Yeah, I like the big screen better haha”
If you can’t spam A through awkward interactions with strangers how are you going to survive in this world? If I’m next to someone playing a steam deck? Best case scenario I’m watching it like a let’s play
I played like 3 hours of Mario Kart 8D with the person next to me on a plane ride when I noticed them watching and it was the best flight I’ve ever had
Hell yeah! Video games aren’t even weird anymore. This silly goose wrote an article because they were in their own head about it
A thrilling part of being alive around other humans is your ability to bond even if “on paper” you’re not supposed to be friends
It pains me to bring up a 4chan meme, but it’s literally this.
Wasn’t handheld gaming pretty socially acceptable in Japan? IIRC, the regular DS was very popular among women there. Probably has something to do with how much time people spend commuting by train there
I feel like there’s a big difference between playing a video game on public transit and playing one in a park
Edit: Especially when you’re taking your kids to the park.
It is. One of Japan’s best selling games is Monster Hunter Portable on the PSP
Guy on the right is 100% correct though
“I had a German guy ask me about battery life and then sound unimpressed”
When I told r/steamdeck years ago that the deck is too big and heavy I got mocked relentlessly for being puny. Dare not offer critique in the face of gamer nerds. Also, not that this matters, but I was much fresher off weightlifting at the time (canceled my membership when covid happened).
Compare the “handheld” steam deck to the PS Vita and it’s not even a contest.
You think that’s a console? pulls out Lenovo Legion Go THIS is a console!

Mobile gaming went downhill after the Game Boy Advance.
I had no idea it was that big, the fucking audacity of strapping it to the seat in front of you.
The posts making fun of it are pretty good.
