Hell, Cuba has a p low birth rate right now, and a part of that is because of the embargo making life genuinely difficult for millions of cubans but it does kinda show that a low birth rate is just inevitable in a developed, stable society where women have rights
a low birth rate is just inevitable in a developed, stable society where women have rights
i think in a semi-utopian society with no scarcity, where potential ecological disasters have been avoided or mitigated, and where children are raised communally, birth rates would be higher (but still lower than the early 1900s in the west / late 1900s in the global south)
i do agree that low birthrates in themselves are not bad though
The issue isn’t really population reduction, it’s population decline. You can quickly end up in a situation where too much of the population is old and there isn’t enough young people to support them, and it can have really bad socioeconomic and political impacts on society.
Humanity would survive and likely eventually level off at a lower population at some point, which would maybe even be beneficial in some ways, but the interim period would be pretty miserable for everyone.
you have to care about birth rates to some degree out of simple materialist need, like, you need people to do things in the future and take care of an aging population that is less and less able to care for itself
but yeah, personally I don’t think the planet needs billions of people on it, but what’s the solution? arguing for a managed population decline could easily be construed as (or actually be, depending on who’s managing it) eugenics bullshit
to keep the humanity going, yes i think women should get together and say screw you assholes
Women are part of humanity and might not want to starve to death in their own shit in old age, not everything is part of some Gender Conflict where The Men are the only ones who care about birth rates
Don’t go off at ME like i’m some birth rate champion fascist btw I’m literally the “people shouldn’t even be parents” guy, I’m just explaining to you why birth rates matter outside of fascist race replacement crank concerns because
If Humanity can’t survive without capitalism and can’t survive without people reproducing of their own free will
it’s something that matters outside of capitalism unless yes you want to just throw up your hands and go “i don’t care about a functioning society”
I would also add that, anecdotally, there seem to be a lot of women who want to be mothers but struggle to find partners and the stability to do so (up till recently this was the case for my sister, thankfully she found a good partner last year).
That’s not exactly an ideal situation for women either, if many of they want to experience motherhood but can’t.

If it’s inevitable it’s inevitable.
Just saying if there sociological causes that can be ethnically mitigated it would probably be good to mitigate them.
