What’s everyone’s NYE plans? For me, a friend hosts a gathering each year with a small group of regulars. It’s close to home so getting there & home is easy. There’s usually a spit and other yummy foods and a bonfire. I may get quite drunk as a fitting send-off to this year.

Wander along the waterfront and catch up at a local with some friends/fam early. Might stick around to see if I can see the 9:30 fireworks. Hopefully home in bed by 10:30 😊 which is just perfect in my books

Drug the cats and put on some bass heavy music before the boomies start. Boyo may or may not get out of work early, so food plans pending. Otherwise, nada.

I’ve heard of people running the dryer on the airing cycle with a few tennis balls in to hide the noise. Luckily enough I’ve never needed it, one of the perks of being in the sticks.

Interesting technique! I don’t own a drier. We are only about 1km from a big Boom site now. I’ve not heard sound check, so might be paranoid about how bad it will be…

Spending this one at home given how tough the year has been. Probably just have favourite movies from the year on in the background while I put together goals for next year and a year ahead tarot reading before catching some local fireworks and bed.

Stay home and re-arrange my sock drawer. I kid you not - I’m immersed in a major shuffle & redeal of home furnishings/cupboards/clothing atm. Hoped to get it done by now, but no dice. Then tackle the bookshelves with the remainder of my leave. Probably won’t get to that this holidays now. Some major donating of unwanted cookware etc. coming up in the new year too. Will take a break at midnight to have a drink and wish the new year well and wait for the noise to die down a bit before attempting sleep.

My absolute fab faves that have died a horrible death are a pair of norwegian over the knee fair isle socks in pure lambswool - mended many times and now have completely disintegrated. Alas, moth got into them some years ago and they never fully recovered. Still, 1983 to 2025 is a fair lifespan for a sock. I mourn their passing and keep looking out for replacements.

I “joined” the Libreoffice marketing team this year (it means I’ve been added to the reply-all when someone emails the marketing email address). I’d like to do something interesting on that front that could get some traction. It seems like most of the people involved are old IT guys from Greece and Malta, and the promotional material they’ve put out recently has been very ugly and “German” coded. Just too busy with too much going on, not sleek and minimalist like a modern software company

I have tested my cake and it passes the edibility check. I can now pass it around at work without fear of embarrasing myself. The attempt at fruit swirled though it didn’t work quite so well, I have yet to master that, it’s more evenly sunk to the bottom creating a slighly sticky fruity bottom layer, which is not quite what I was envisaging but tastes good.

Ancient trick for even fruit distribution which you probably know, but I’m putting it out there anyway - use some of the flour for the recipie to coat the fruit before including. Helps the fruit stay buoyant in the mix. Works for anything up to and including smallish stoned cherries. Chunks of plum/apricot/peach/pineapple need to be 2 cm or less square or they’re too heavy and will sink anyway. If the cherries are large, then they do better if halved. This hack helps with dried fruit too, especially if the dried fruit has been soaked in tea or brandy etc.

This was a cooked/bottled mix. Sort of a very chunky sauce/jam mix. It mostly seems to have been absorbed into the cake, which has made it very moist and flavourful.

You’re doing well, my muffins and pumpkin breads were decent but somehow my cakes (with the exception of sponge cakes) sucked
