If you think deodorant is a seasonal item, you’re part of the problem.
I took it more as a plea to people who think it’s optional year round
Approaching? Lucky you, not dealing with a heat wave for the past week.
Like the sweat doesn’t outstink the deodorant within five minutes of leaving the house.
Idk what kind of deodorant you’re using but I regularly go for long walks where I come back absolutely drenched in sweat, like wring out a tall glass of sweat type drenched. All I can smell on the shirt is deodorant. You sure you’re using it correctly / enough?
In my opinion I am using enough because it does its job when it is not swelteringly hot outside and I also don’t stink of deodorant. (I am rather sensitive to that kind of thing) If I put on enough that I don’t stink of sweat I just stink of deodorant (with a tinge of sweat) instead which I don’t think is all that much better personally.
which I don’t think is all that much better personally.
For the other people it is.
That depends on the person, plenty I’ve talked to have explicitly said that sweat smell is better than the mix resulting from trying to just drown it in a different odor. For me personally it’d also depend on the deodorant.
Well it’s a good thing they are not stuck between my armpits huh?
Some of us are stinkier than others. I remember I was once the only man working in a bakery with all women (edit actually there was also a trans man working there but I don’t think he was super deep into his transition yet), and they were all somehow surprised that I had to shower every day. Not one of them showered more than every other day, and I genuinely had to convince them that I would not be pleasant to be around if I tried to adopt that habit. Meanwhile I was equally dumbfounded that apparently sporadic showering is far more common than I’d thought.
I was having this problem until I looked online and found the brand I had been using my entire life had lowered their active ingredient by nearly half (all while rebranding to 48 HOUR PROTECTION) solved by finding a brand that hadn’t enshittified, fuck you Speed Stick
Wash yourself and apply antiperspirant.
Also: you can get deoderants that aren’t antiperspirants, which i personally go with because we kinda sweat for a reason (i’ll take all the cooling i can possibly get)
For people who didn’t know: The smell is caused by bacteria breaking down the compounds in your sweat (and other stuff that ends up in there, like skin flakes), not by the sweat itself. So it’s perfectly possible to be drenched in sweat yet not smell much at all.
I’ve been using one of these salt stick deodorants for about a year now. I keep a stick of the scented antiperspirant as well for back up, because I still feel like sometimes I have an odor even if I don’t notice it. I’ve only tried the brand I have now, but do you have any recommendations?
Violet:

Its 40°C outside, do I bathe in deodorant before going out ?
the stuff i use actually seems to last remarkably well, and it’s not an antiperspirant so it has to last through full sweat production too!
What stuff do you use? I haven’t found one that lasted all day, just antiperspirant.
ICA hjärtat “special care” aluminiumfri deoderant
But you know, good luck finding this outside sweden, hence why this comment is ever so slightly snarky because i’m not quite sure what you expected :P
Sometimes i feel like i’m the only one who doesn’t order everything on amazon…Ah dang hahaha, it was worth a try anyway ;)
My 12 year old t-shirts will stink regardless.
Let poor thing rest in peace
No, they’re still in one peace. Actually in pretty good condition since I always air dry them.
Some people don’t have the financial resources or mental health required to maintain their hygiene in extreme circumstances (which the daily forecasts are starting to become). Practice kindness and patience, they’re skills that need to be developed and will be vital to our species survival.

I don’t get it. What do you mean? Everyone can wash. And everyone can use antiperspirants (there are cheap ones).
People with mental health issues struggle to do basic self care tasks sometimes as it seems overwhelming. Its actually a sign to look for in your friends and family if they start neglecting personal hygiene, as it can lead you to getting them help
even just executive dysfunction (which MANY people have) can make stuff like showering absolutely exhausting, because it’s actually a WHOLE bunch of steps in disguise. Get a towel, take off your clothes (every item is its own step, mentally), get in the bathroom and close the door, etc etc etc i can’t even be arsed to list all the fucking steps dear god.
I’ve had to stop even trying to use shampoo because if i did i would never shower at all. I’m happy if manage to get myself into the shower and rinse off like… a couple times per month, if that…
I just want a sonic shower like in star trek: just clothes off, get in shower and BWEEEEEEEM, clothes back on.
Someone get violet on the convo
All aboard the STANK BUS baby!
Heck those! I’d rather smell natural scent of human species than get chemicals brurnt into my scent glands.
Some folks go too crazy with deodorants I tell you what.
Can’t speak to subjective preference, but there is no scientific research suggesting antiperspirants or deodorants can burn you or harm you in any other way when used as directed
Article providing an overview with links to more research (arc)
Ah yes, fair pont. I didn’t mean it in literal burns; more like smell so intense, you can still smell it even if you’re away from the source, just by breathing. OH! just like when staring right into very bright light and for a moment you see a dark spot. And off of which both are really bothering to me
I’ve had antiperspirant fuck up my armpit hair. They were white with a weird texture for a year. I stick to deodorant now
you can definitely slightly hurt yourself with antiperspirants, just because sweat exists for a reason. When it’s 40°C you need every single drop of sweat your body can muster to avoid heat stroke.
Thankfully deoderants without antiperspirant exists.
Lemmy anti vax shit. Just fantastic.
What does that have to do with vaccines?
“Pseudoscience” is a pain in the ass to spell I guess
Where?
I mean. Calling names out of nothing? Come on
Good Lord the inability to tie associations together is crazy to me.
The above is pseudoscience bullshit.
except you don’t smell our natural scent, you smell the stench of bacterial byproducts, because people can’t go around constantly cleaning their armpits.
Also you can just get deoderants that aren’t antiperspirants. There’s no downside to those, they just neutralize the smell and cover up the remnants with some perfume. (you can even find pure deoderants without even perfume if you look hard enough).
smell the stench of bacterial byproducts
True. Smells of bacteria’s farts.
people can’t go around constantly cleaning their armpits.
In theory we could if you catch my drift. Some people use it as a fetish, but personally I’m not that brave.
Also you can just get deoderants that aren’t antiperspirants
Pardon my eventual ignorance, but from my understanding deodorants are perfumed - “stink mitigation” if you will and antiperspirants are just to try and sweat less, like “stink prevention”
as the name suggests de-odorants are supposed to remove the smell, and the perfume is just an extra to mask what’s left over and to make you actively smell nice.
The stuff i get is lightly perfumed and works great, it frankly baffles me that it’s not the standard. There are also completely non-perfumed ones, usually branded for people who are allergic or sensitive to smells or somesuch.
My youngest brother thinks like you and uses a fancy all natural deodorant made with coconut oil and baking soda. When he gets into the car, the car smells like BO. When he visits and has his own bathroom, you can smell the bathroom when you walk by.
