Fresh fruit is refreshing, isn’t too sweet, and doesn’t make your heart race after eating it.

Pick up some watermelon, cantaloupe, mango, or pineapple next time you’re shopping groceries. This is the time of year they’re all ripe.

    I hit a mid point of sorts. I absolutely love chocolate and would always get some form of a chocolate cake for my birthday, but maybe 4-5 years ago I found that I absolutely love a good fruit tart over a cake any day, chocolate or not.

    Two different categories of food. Sure I like fresh fruit more than most desserts, I like potato chips more than most desserts too.

    Watermelon is one of my favorite foods.

    Ricotta cake is not too sweet and is a dessert. Cheesecake. Ice cream. All are good. I just have not much of a sweet tooth, dessert is an occasional thing not a regular one.

    I’m kinda worried. Your heart shouldn’t be racing from desserts at all. And, if it does, there’s a reason that’s a non zero risk of something you should talk to a doctor about.

    I agree that it makes a lovely post prandial the have some light fruit. I don’t know if I’d say better, because fruit isn’t going to mesh well after everything, and it’s sweet enough that it is a dessert if sweetness is the standard used to define it. But it’s quite nice.

    That being said, I’ve kinda gotten past the eating more phase of my life. I’d rather have a nice cup of coffee, or maybe the very rare bourbon or even a soda. I tend to have water with food, so finishing with a beverage that’s got flavor is my preference

        Sugar highs have been debunked time and time again. I’ll reiterate what the other poster said. If you experience any negative symptoms from a sweet dessert you really should see a doctor.

        A normal healthy body produces enough insulin that unless you’re eating insane amounts of pure sugar (I’m talking pounds of raw sugar kind of insane) your blood sugar levels will stay on a very narrow band and your heart should not race.

        How high are you talking here?

        A little bump isn’t anything unusual, it’s the blood sugar spiking, then hormones kicking in as the cycle adjusts. But that’s not what I’d call “racing”. Hell, it very often isn’t even an actual increase to pulse as much as it is an awareness of one’s heartbeat.

        But if you’re jumping up more than, say, ten beats a minute for more than maybe five minutes, bring it up to your doctor, make sure everything is fine. Could just be that we have different usages of racing, but if that’s not the case, it can be a sign of something out of whack. What I’ve run into with my patients back in the day was either incipient diabetes, or the early stages of heart disease. But, again, that’s if the spike in pulse is more than maybe ten extra a minute, or lasts longer than what a jump scare can cause

        It’s one of those things where if it is a sign of something starting to get wonky, starting is the key word. Treating things early means treatment is easier and has higher success rates, sooner.

    I don’t agree that it’s better than every dessert. Learn to bake your own desserts and they don’t have to be too sweet, but can still have amazing flavors and textures.

    However, I do like fresh fruits better than any sweetened electrolyte drinks. Melons and cucumbers combined with a salty snack is very refreshing and won’t spike your blood sugar nearly so much as a sports drink.

    Addition: I usually think the main course is better than any dessert. I usually want to leave a lasting taste of the main course in my mouth rather than the dessert, but I don’t want to be rude and decline a dessert that someone worked hard on.

    At restaurants, I never order dessert. Makes me look kinda cheap maybe, but it’s for my own sake so idgaf.

    Not to my personal tastes. Chocolate > fruit all of the time except for dark chocolate over a certain percentage.

    I don’t care for the texture of watermelon and I’m not a huge fan of the others. Cantaloupe is fine, I guess. Mango is OK, though I’d never just go out and buy one.

    I probably like quite ripe (some spotting on the peel) bananas most, but I still don’t think of it as dessert. Berries are nice every now and again, in yogurt or in addition to whatever I’m having for dessert. I also don’t eat dessert every meal nor every day.

    It CAN be pretty damn good but too inconsistent. Cherries can be amazing, or sour. Extra ripe plum can be an incredible juicy mess, or weirdly dry and lacking flavour. Watermelon… Is hard to have bad so that’s a good one.

    But custard is amazing 100% of the time

    My summer dessert:

    Frozen blueberries with a sprinkle of instant coffee, milk, cinnamon, a tiny amount of sugar, and roasted cashews. Plus a square of 85% chocolate and an iced coffee.
