The only thing that this caller says is wrong is that Rishi Sunak isn’t british, and that Boris Johnson would be a good prime minister. None of the tory snakes love their country, and none of the conservative voter base see a british born person who is an ethnic indian as british.

I 100% believe that the reason that Kemi was being kept around is that all of the failure of the Tories can be lumped on her (which is somewhat unfair because she’s isn’t bright enough to be responsible for any of it) so when it’s getting close to the next general election, maybe two years out or so, their will suddenly be letters going in, and a vote of no confidence.
Only they are a bit screwed now though that Robert Jenrick has switch sides. If Farage goes down, and it looks like he’s going to, maybe he’ll switch back.
You made me think of something interesting; if farage gets booted out of the commons, while it’s not going to derail any of his plans, it is going to stop “reform” from being able to replace the tories, if they blame everything on Kemi and replace her with someone “electable” a little bit of time before the next GE.

If there was a way to open new fields and guarantee the gas only fed the domestic supply and was tapered off as we decarbonise our grid I could support such a move. However I suspect the only way would be the government controlling the gas and contracting out the servicing of that to the existing oil and gas companies. Even then it would be awfully tempting for the government to slow down on the decarbonisation for cheap energy just before an election.
As it is there is no incentive for a license holder to do anything else but maximise the extraction and profits while it has the license.
Does anyone know how these licenses are normally structured?
The project is only profitable for Equinor because the UK taxpayers would shoulder almost all of Rosebank’s development cost.

This is a really weird decision because not only will it annoy people, you don’t even get any theoretical benefits (assuming that there ever are any) until well after the next general election. A cursory online search indicates that it takes between 5 and 8 years for something like this to be built up, and it’ll probably be more like 8 because they don’t really have any reason to hurry.
I remember reading an article about how Europe needed to have states producing more of its own natural gas in the wake of coming off Russian supply, and I remember commenting that there were few states in Europe that produced much. Norway and the UK were the most substantial, and even the UK was a net importer.
