“Hey if you were rich and you couldn’t give the money away, what would be something outrageous you’ve always wanted to buy but couldn’t justify spending money on? Give me a completely selfish purchase you’d make.”
I probably wouldn’t do what a lot of rich people do and get into collecting property or cars or things.
I thought about what I’d actually get and laughed my ass off because it’s kind of left field and very dweeby.
I’d get a decent piano and a home telescope that’s good enough to see a somewhat decent look at Jupiter. I don’t even know how to play the piano, but it would be fun to learn. I’ve always wanted to. The telescope thing is just because I think space is pretty and you can get pretty decent telescopes now for not that much money. The idea of seeing the surface of a gas giant with a small(ish) home telescope just seems kind of amazing to me.
I realised that both these things together would only cost me like $10k, but no way am I getting a real ass piano while renting. Not enough space and those things are hard to move. So I guess technically I’d have to buy a house too, but I’m not counting things people need like shelter in this thought exercise.
So much of our money just goes to things like healthcare, food, housing. All on basic needs. No wonder capitalists don’t want those to be publicly funded, you take away that endless life subscription and profit chasing and I think most people wouldn’t actually need that much to be happy.
Anyway what would you buy? The purchase has to be an object, has to be just for enjoyment, and the implication is you can’t use the money to do something selfless like fund the revolution or give it to the hungry. I know, booo, but I think it’s fun to see what people would do for fun with money, if they didn’t have to use it solely for survival. What would your dream purchase be?
A small home without black mold, windows that properly seal and open and close, and floors and doors that don’t let daylight in around them that don’t threaten to fall in. Some clothing that fits. Proper treatment for my injury, dental work.
This reminds me, I need a mattress too
one (1) stick of ram
Ha

I want a battleship
I feel like people would treat me differently if I owned a battleship
We can be pirates together!!
Honestly, you might be able to get a piano for free. People give them away if you’re able to move it.
I would also get a telescope, some big lenses, and a really nice star tracking mount for astrophotography.
If I had an absurd amount of money, I’d start putting MeshCore repeaters all over the place and build out the network myself.
on the tankie site
claims to not want to purchase a tank
uh-huh. sure. next you’ll say you wouldn’t purchase a large spoon with which to procure heaps of ukrainian grain

Tanks or helicopters are only a few million IIRC, BTRs were less than some large trucks
(Not legal advice but) apparently you can even get them street legal if you disable the gun and retrofit it to prevent road damage. Source. We really live in the wild wild west I guess.
T-54 variants sold for some 400k back in the day (inflation not accounted)
If it has to be purely selfish, then I’d want this:

i was at the water park the other day with my friends and i was joking about how Elon Musk or someone with similar wealth could just buy all the overpriced corn dogs and rental inner tubes he could imagine without a single thought to his bank account. imagine that, being able to go to the theme park and buy every little deep fried food and add on you could think of. that sounds like a fucking blast, and instead he’s out here buying twitter to make a safe haven for nazis. you could be at the water park blowing your money on assorted taffy, Elon, and you do this instead?
I’d open libraries. It is all I want in the world. Like beautiful ass libraries as well
I dunno about anyone, but I would personally buy off Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft, and force them all to inject woke commie LGBTQIA+ propaganda into their games like the chuds and gamers fearmonger every day about. Especially Pokemon. Maybe retcon the entirety of gen 5 so that Team Plasma are actually the heroes, becoming a radical revolutionary group fighting to free both Pokemon and the proletariat under the leadership of Chairman N
i mean, i don’t see any restrictions on how much money we have in this hypothetical, so…
Publicly release all the keys to the console firmware while you’re at it.
Not some sort of sanctuary for fucked up birds?
WAIT YOU’RE RIGHT. I did say I wanted to start a pigeon rescue
i guess mine is more because my mind immediately goes to “buy land and start a solar farm” but that still tops out at like a million dollars cuz I would only be interested in something I can personally maintain, not running a corp of any kind.
A nice couch, a jar of the best jam and peanut butter money can buy, a mp3 player, a type of ice cream maker, and a record player. I seriously want a nice a jam first and second a couch which can transform into a bed so I can sleep and chill in the same room
Money can’t buy the best jam. The best jam is homemade.
That’s true which is why I said ‘the best money can buy’
If i were rich id pay off my house, have my friends move in with me and retire and get 16 cats like Alex Albon oh and I’d start a CRT factory where we make modern CRTs so I can resurrect light gun games
I LIKE THE WAY YOU THINK

When I think about what I want to be doing, I wish I had the space and tooling to make things, but not hold on to them. I’d sell them or palm them off to someone. Things like a CNC machine or a lathe, or a forklift for puttering things around a workshop, would all be quite expensive. I don’t really have an interest in keeping or storing the things I make, though it would be nice to see them in the community.
House would be the main thing, having space to do the stuff I like without cramming it all into a few rooms would be nice. I’d get a LOT of custom music gear made, i’d like a workshop and tools are expensive, i could do wonders with some industrial kitchen equipment at home, thst costs a lot. I have hobbies with very high price ceilings.
