The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our Piefeds, but in ourselves.

I still check in from time to time, check reports, make sure there’s no spam. It’s just that… I don’t have the energy to move the comms again, and I don’t want to put in the effort when the task on the Fediverse seems Sisyphean.

      I definitely relate.

I’m trying to keep things manageable nowadays. A few posts per day, that’s it. It makes it easier to handle.

Piefed is built around social credits and a karma system that favors homogenization. Unfortunately all this kind of shit gets really messy at scale. I understand trying to organize the chaos, but I think the thing that works about Lemmy is mainly that it’s small, overlooked, and by some good fortune the number of assholes is relatively low in percentage currently. I’m not sure it could ever scale well more than 5x without becoming a cesspool. Until the walls start to implode, keeping it simple and open is for the best. Piefed is chasing it’s tail.

      Goodbye Post

Looks like their Piefed instance incorporated a vote limit impacting a users ability to interact with their audience, and the holy one just threw up their hands at the thought of having to migrate due to instance dumbfuckery again.

What a weird policy decision. I don’t think the Fediverse needs artificial scarcity or austerity.

I wouldn’t agree with it but I see why they do it. If you listen to the instance operators and comm mods talk a big priority is they’re trying not to just build another reddit. So occasionally instance devs get these ideas to try and deincentivise some of the toxic patterns reddit encouraged.

I don’t understand. A vote limit? As in a user can’t vote more than X amount of times per day or something? If so, how does that impact the ability to interact with their audience?

The holy one had many followers, and often had more than 250 people to bestow their blessed upvote upon. Pedantry should never get in the way of good works.

OP isn’t correct in this case, I think it’s to stay aligned with the tongue in cheek tone of the post.

The voting limit is for votes given, not received.

    Meh…

At first i was pleased to see the content. Plenty of cool pics of old things.

A lot of it was just reposting low effort memes, which is not at all a problem, it’s just no great loss.

But the more i interacted with them, the more i saw long waffly comments without a firm point. Or saw them arguing in favour of common misconceptions, or in favour of outdated “heirarchies are a good thing” understandings of history, or in favour of arguments that more recent research casts a lot of doubt on.

What’s the legacy of a profilic poster of middling content? Prolific is good, fediverse needs content. But the content itself was no great loss.

I’ve been accused of many things over the years, but this is probably the first time I’ve been accused of waffling.

They’d post a lot of pretty lazy rightwing history memes, and are a pretty ardant anticommunist (buts par for the course in the anglosphere)

but also whatever they’re just some guy, no strong feelings, there’s more important things to worry about

Have you ever met a pug? They’re ALL like that. Try arguing philosophy with one - you’ll end up with piss all over your shoes.

But I ask you this, how many pugs post historical content in meme format?

We only know of one, a most extraordinary one, one who only wanted to upvote more.

Now, because of Piefed’s pedantry, Dog has abandoned us, and you’re saying good riddance because he got some mud on the carpet once. Shame on you, sir. I hope you have the wisdom to never own pets.

How many dogs have anti-communist brainworms that make them constantly punch left? I can get along fine with just about anyone, dog, human, etc so long as they’re not demanding I share their exact perspective on every country in the world and denouncing me as a fascist otherwise. Actual dogs make for much more pleasant conversational partners in my experience, though trying to reason with either is equally unproductive.

I dunno i think the better analogy is a cat bringing dead birds like 3+ times a day.

Cool, that’s really sweet, it’s an impressive volume and get that you’re trying to do me a solid but that’s not actually useful to me, makes me sad for the birds and the amount makes it more annoying, not less.

Piefed/Lemmy is my main social media. So I didn’t see those memes on insta or r$ddit or facebook etc, I only saw them here. So to me, it is indeed a great loss because now I don’t see them at all.

the more i interacted with them

Yeah, I agree that PJ got in arguments that left me thinking: Why? But everyone on the fediverse is a little eccentric, and he is definitely one of us.

On content: they were saying that bringing up Lysenkoism and saying communist societies didn’t actively WANT to have famines was the equivalent of Holocaust Denial (which I don’t think it is, the Nazis were pretty intentional in doing the Jewish Holocaust).

On context: Yes this was part of their work moderating a TankieJerk community.

I don’t really get people who are bothered by Tankies, during a time of rightwing fascism. Tankies are such a small minority that they’re pretty much irrelevant and can be easily avoided or ignored as inconsequential.

That’s a cute way of saying “I was downplaying the Holodomor and Great Chinese Famine by spreading misinformation that doesn’t even align with the basic timeline of events and got banned for it”

          In the US, sure.

On the Fediverse, where red fash are a significant proportion and regularly spread misinformation about, say, historical genocides, or fucking North Korea?

On the Fediverse, they’re a problem. Hence why it was important for me to speak up on the problem on the Fediverse, and not, say, when I was on Reddit.

Sure, bc the mantra of bOtH sIdEs SaMe had nothing to do with Trump winning the last USA election. (/s) Granted that the Threadiverse itself is wholly inconsequential though.

If you listen to pretty much anyone arguing about us over on Reddit, explaining why they gave this place a legit try for multiple years but left and vehemently refuse to ever consider coming back, it’s primarily tankies that they themselves cite as the reason why they left.

Though it is unclear if they realized that hexbears aren’t actually tankies so much as a more pure form of troll that believes in nothing except dunking on people. It does, however, somewhat go with the territory of denying factual reality in preference to the echo chamber consensus?

Essentially in man vs. bear, people are choosing the bears, and the incels being avoided would do well to ask why that is, if we ever want to grow the Threadiverse.

If the views in question are about whether or not the vast majority of people should have decent lives, that’s kind of significant.
