You can get a STEM degree from a state school, or a private institution. Often the private institution is more prestigious, (e.g. Harvard, MIT) but there are plenty of state schools with good reps (Cal Poly).

His point is that the quality of instruction is not that much different, which is true vs. a state school (usually the cheapest option). It definitely doesn’t scale linearly with cost, much like luxury vehicles. Most of the cost gets wrapped up in being a status symbol.

A decent education costs $30-70k depending on variables. Sometimes less.

the relative value of an elite school undergrad vs a regular/normal state school undergrad is the professional network and brand.

sometimes people with elite school credentials confuse this with an actual higher quality education, which is understandable because as far as I’ve seen among elite school alumni, for 4 years all they were “taught” was that they were receiving a higher quality education than others.

The main point of this is not necessarily because those colleges are super high-quality (although they can be), but the brand shows that you come from wealth thanks to the countryclubification of both colleges and the workplace.

I’m a grown ass adult with a corporate job and banks would still raise an eyebrow at loaning me $100K. There’s no reason an 18 year old should sign off on that.
