They forgot the part where the product has to be worthwhile to buy like adding cool new features or quality of life improvements maybe even online multiplayer to make it worth buying. But no its gonna be the rom repackaged in a shitter emulator likely running entirely on stolen emulator code like everything else Nintendo has done. Does this dweeb forget Nintendo couldnt even be bothered to emulate their own games properly for the worthless switch online service?

I do agree the whole “oh no I’m just emulating to preserve games that can’t be acquired otherwise” excuse cringy.

I emulate everything, because I want to. Because piracy is cool. Because I want the entire ROM set. I’ll pirate everything, I don’t give a shit, I don’t have noble reasons. Intellectual property means nothing to me.

there are a whole shitload of lost films from early cinema and even TV shows as late as whatever doctor who episodes are missing

mainline pokemon isn’t in danger of becoming lost media but a bunch of other stuff is or has been lost.

I don’t think they are arguing against preservation though, they are criticizing a specific type of person who is opposed to unofficial emulation unless it’s the only option. There are a shocking number of people out there who will avoid options that are both cheaper and higher quality than official means of playing games just because they respect IP rights.

Charging $20 for a 20+/- year old ROM file is wild.

Like holy shit, not even a remake or anything (I guess it wpuld be a remake of a remake?).

    Pokemon Infinite Fusion is free.

Honestly one of the final nail in the coffin for me wanting anything to do with Nintendo was their shitty little ROM subscription service. Like not only are they charging you money for access to ancient ROMs, they have the gall to make it so you lose access the moment you stop paying. Gross. Obligatory “all games companies suck and do this.” But man, fuck Nintendo. Pirate, emulate, fuck gaming companies. They’ve enshittified past the point of return now.

Yeah dawg that shits worth like… $100AUD if you replace the internal battery.

I was talking about Fire Red and Leaf Green though, those are worth even more for some reason, like $300AUD

It kind of sucks though. Used retro game carts used to be dirt cheap. I kind of miss getting a shitty old cart and restoring it, you know?

I guess there are always flash carts for the physical media lovers. Thank god for piracy.

Yeah, it really sucks. I didn’t know the gen 1 games had internal batteries, I thought that was from gen 2 onwards. It really is awful how the “video game collectors” ruined retro gaming by treating old games like an “asset” to accrue wealth instead of ever actually wanting to play them.

              • Who cares about “retro gaming” when emulation is a better experience in every way?

If there is something I don’t care about bourgeois fucksticks inflating the price of, it is legacy media with a fully functional digital replica.

If you do really want physical, are there not flash carts for GB/GBC/GBA?

Yeah all Pokemon games pre-DS had a save battery that dries up in 15 years or so. Your Yellow save is probably long gone, but replacing the battery is pretty cheap and simple and there are lots of guides.

                But yeah, screw investor bros.

I’ve downloaded and deleted the same rom 100 times, costing Nintendo an estimated $2,000. Once I automate this process, I can bring Nintendo’s revenue into the negatives and tank Japan’s economy.

$20 for FRLG when you can literally downloads thousands of much better romhacks based on FRLG ALONE for free. And that’s before mentioning all the Emerald romhacks, or even the rare Ruby/Sapphire ones.

Nintendo could literally release this for free on the NSO service, but because doing it this way gets them more money, this is what they decide on. It’s not even like they released a FRLG remake with completely new features to justify the price lmao

Pokemon modders are incredibly hardworking and have so much love for the franchise. Nintendo are so unfathomably stupid and greedy for shutting them down as much as they can instead of working with them. Look at Pokemon Infinite Fusions, which has thousands upon thousands of unique sprites, or challenge ROM hacks like Run and Bun or Renegade Platinum. If Nintendo released the ds and earlier games for free and actively worked with modders, 100% they would make more money and bring more people to the franchise than their hostility to creators achieves.

      • I don’t think it’s very stupid, it has led to a solid core of a fandom that is literally immune to every criticism of the company and ultimately people do still buy up this slop and even more since Rom Hacks despite being very accessible is very risky to develop

People who run Rom Hacks are likely split between pirates and fervent fans, opening the gap would only encourage more people to join in the fun for free, i have known people buy a switch just for emulation because they can’t bother on PC, or more often, because they’re scared of viruses and have money to burn

I’m actually surprised Nintendo dropped the price at all. I went into an EB Games (Australian GameStop) in 2019 and found a brand new copy of Pokemon Black 2 for $59.95 in their singular Nintendo DS shelf (idk why they dedicated shelf space to it in 2019, but alas).

$59.95 is the exact same price as when it dropped in 2011.

I would also argue that making the older games easily accessible doesn’t even get in the way of making money. Give away FRLG just like they do in the sites. Fuck, it. If you’re brave, put the ROM on your website. Like if I’m a little kid who likes to play in the dort and I get my grubby little hands on a solid, simple entry in the pokemon series, then suddenly AI slop and mobile games feels hollow in comparison. I want to get into the paid versions. Once I have disposable income do you think I want Minecraft toys?! No! I want a Pikachu plushie. I want to fly to watch VGC and I use the hotel you partnered with and you got some revenue by attracting a larger crowd filled with people who preferred Pokemon compared to F2P mobile shit.

Being a cool company with a good product feels like it would be a competitive advantage. Especially if everyone else is a shitty fucking vampire 24/7

Pokémon might be the rare exceptionnwhere emulation is missing a key feature, which is interoperability with other games in the series. You can’t move your captured pokémon up the series to more recent games, unless that’s changed since I last checked.

Even so, I’m not spending 20 on a game I don’t get to keep forever. Fuck that

trade evolution was a fucking mistake, and so is multiple version releases that arbitrarily split Pokemon availability. Love the series but greedy ass company and practices makes me never want to buy a Pokemon game proper

Streetpass-only features for 3ds were the worst. Even when the yo-kai watch games were more popular, pandanoko was almost impossible to obtain legitimately without living in downtown Tokyo.

You can hack Pokemon into your games very easily, but a lot of people like to use Pokemon Home to transfer Pokemon from one game to another, so they can continue to play with their favorite starter from another game. Also in competitive, you get disqualified for using hacked pokemon, which is fucking awful policy. There is no difference in gameplay between hacked and legit Pokemon, the only difference is that it can take hours of grinding to make a competitively viable team, as well as requiring three different games and DLC, and hacked pokemon take 5 seconds and are free

My point was you can likely use some mod to clone your existing Pokémon from another game (stats included) into the new one. I also assume that for tournaments they don’t let you use emulators
