In a video from 19 August, captioned “this might be the most controversial move ever by Disney”, a voiceover says that Disney has announced in an “official statement” the beloved mascot is “undergoing gender transition surgery to become Moxie Mouse”. It goes on to claim that the move is being made in the name of “inclusivity, diversity and understanding”, saying: “It will help reduce the stigma around transgenderism, especially with kids.”

Technically Mickey is neither male or female, Mickey is a cartoon.

It took me several minutes of consideration to decide if I should leave my two cents on this post and, by extension, to all the comments being added to it. My first instinct was to get on with my life, avoid the friction, let others be and carry forward.

But to my best attempt, I failed.

My next words may, most probably get me banned from this community, flagged for anti-social sentiments and persecuted for stating my personal thoughts on what is a very sensible topic in the Lemmyverse.

With this in mind, here is what I have to say.

    First point

The entire situation is ridiculous and does not deserve a second of consideration, from anyone.

The so called conservatives are, true to themselves, using another opportunity to make noise and keep everyone angry and preventing people from thinking. It’s their modus operandi. Everyone should know it by know. Just ignore it and go for the real problems. This is noise.

    Second point

If Disney is, in fact, planning to do such thing, it is not “in the name of inclusivity, diversity and understanding” but to try to make itself more friendly or at least less deserving of animosity from LGBTQ+ view. It is a strategy of appeasing and appeal, not a change of heart.

    Third point

Rewritting a character doesn’t erase all the background it has built for it. This ties in with the argument for the infinite multiverse that has been used to gender swap or review again and again a character with several decades of well put together background. It is corporate money extraction and audience grabbing strategies. It only diminishes the creation and the relevance it already has.

    Fourth point

Mickey Mouse has been extensively developed over a century. From the now public domain Steam Boat Willy to nowadays revivalist Mickey Mouse, the character has grown into several directions. From being a war time propagandist, to getting nephews (or adopting them), to finding a girlfriend/fiancée, becoming a high profile detective, aiding archeologists and living a near endless number of one-off adventures, Mickey Mouse has always been Mickey Mouse. Fans were lost, fans were gained, but the power of the character was being itself.

    Fifth point

By being itself, Mikey Mouse helped introduce a very large roster of other characters. Some took on roots and grew by themselves while others simply fizzled into oblivion. Among those who faded into obscurity is a character created by Disney Studios Brazil in the late 80’s, early 90’s, avian, tall, slender, garishly coloured and dressed and a bit flamboyant and eccentric. In Portuguese, which is gender declining, the character was addressed has he/him, which defines it as male but there was always something that denied it. An undertone that hinted that something was not quite as it seemed. Take into consideration Brazil has had a large transexual population from very early on. Such a character made sense. Regardless if it was a FtM or MtF one. It was there, it was a statement. And it was welcome and accepted by the already existing and long lasting characters in the brazilian roster. Why did the character fizzle? Don’t know. The comics stopped being issue where I live for a while and when they returned the character was nowhere to be found. Or maybe it just went through its metamorphosis and what I got was it’s new form, it’s new self, it’s true self.

    Sixth point

Going back to Mickey Mouse becoming transgender and thus Moxie, it makes no sense because as Mickey Mouse exists, today, it has more power of influence than trying to make the mouse into a completely different figure. That character, as a vehicle to introduce a new, LGBTQ, character and establish it as part of the roster would be a winning strategy. And a true change of heart for the brand. The character is here to stay, like it or not. Cultural evolution, not destruction.

    My final thoughts.

Everyone wants to be a special case nowadays. The christians want special treatment because they are christians; extend the logic towards the belief of your choice. I’m just going for the low hanging fruit. Autistics want special treatment because they’re autistic; insert whatever condition in the sentence and it will still work. The same for every social trend. Everyone wants their problems ahead of all others because they are special. And that is the root cause for the problem. Attention seeking generates a show. Makes noise, attracts clicks, generates money, keeps people entertained and polarized, bickering and reacting. That’s the entire purpose. When the purpose should and is to view and treat everyone as a human being by default regardless of what makes them not different but unique.

I’m out. No more Lemmy for me for the rest of the weekend. Peace to all. Be happy and help another to be as happy as you.

The group that decries “triggering” sure does get triggered easily.

Their entire lives seem to revolve around it - on both ends of the game. I just can’t imagine living that way.

Because they don’t like it, so they try and use it to hurt others. Nevermind that it doesn’t trigger others nearly so violently as it does them.

No, they don’t fume. They manipulate support for themselves from the perennially gullible, by manufacturing fake outrage over endless trivial things, adding up to a constant mind-breaking hysterical barrage.

That’s especially creepy coming from the “sex chromosomes = sex = gender” people. They’re worried about his gender when what they should be worried about is that a logical consequence of their supposedly genuine beliefs requires his costume to have male genitals that he uses for heterosexual intercourse. Perhaps if they’re willing to abridge their standards for a corporate fantasy character they might extend that tolerance to actual human beings.
