I’m currently going through the junior year of my high school, that was 20 years ago exactly. It has been 22 years since my favorite baseball team, the Boston Red Sox, had finally broken their Curse of the Bambino in 2004. The Harry Potter main book series ended 19 years ago while the film series ended 15 years ago.
When you’re a five year old, one year is 20% of your entire life. When you’re a 50 year old, it’s 2%. As you get older, time passing does speed up, at least from your older perspective.
For me, and I know it’s a bit of a meme, but the 1970s really do feel like they were only 30 years ago. It’s like my brain picked 2000 as the point from which I understand and reference the passage of time. I have no doubt that when I’ve been alive longer in the 2000s than the 1900s I still won’t feel like that’s true.
Just now when I tried to think of an example and realized I’ve been having these kinds of thoughts for 30 years. I remember in the 90s when I realized it was as long ago that Grease came out as it was from then to when it took place.
Tech. I hate new tech more and more every year. I used to love new tech it was awesome and exciting even enjoyably silly at times.
Now I hate it. Everything spies on you. Everything is used to persecute you. Being online used to be a refuge from the shit sandwich of life, now it’s become the destroyer of worlds. While there is still some good tech news, it’s too often just bullshit wrapped up in surveillance packages.
Want to just EMP the world now
I feel this.
Remember when tech was weird, innovative, and wacky? Doing crazy things, and not always successfully. Especially around desktop computers.
and yeah, now its all plastic slop that listens to everything you do and reports back to some big database, that gets sold to and merged with other databases to build massive profiles about you. Oh watched video about drugs in 2023? No health insurance for you in 2045 because the profile has labeled you a drug user.
I genuinely think the last tech thing I had any excitement over was the initial Ryzen release, cause the chiplet design and unbelievable amount of cores you could have were just technically interesting at the time… and yet, somehow, despite going from 4 threads to 12 threads, things are still slower and more clunky… and thats because no one bothers to optimize anymore and just relies on brute force CPU/GPU horsepower to get through.
technology now is not just creepware feeding the profile, its also just boring and unimpressive and stupid (like toasters that require a live service that cant make toast anymore after the company shuts down)
Y2K was half a lifetime ago.
I ain’t dying at 50 but you do you
y2k really highlighted how stupid people were.
cause after it passed, there was soooo much about how it was stupid, pointless, etc, because nothing happened.
completely ignorant and oblivious to all the work that went into making sure it was boring do nothing event.
Recently realized I’ve gained weight seemingly overnight. Used to be rather skinny. Then I started thinking when this must have started and it’s been 7 years.
I counted the other day for a different comment and I’ve not been speaking to my mother for 14 years.
When an old, wrinkled, grey haired person, started talking to me about an old thing, and then didn’t have experience about the things before it, like I did.
This was a while back. It makes me pretty happy now when it happens tbh. The people are always surprised, and I now realize they don’t expect me to be that old. I’ve noticed that sometimes they seem to even be a little surprised when I know about whatever things they’re talking about to begin with.
I’m older than old people! I made it. Wtf?!
Last weekend I bought a switch 2, and a father and son were in front of me. I got the pokopia bundle, they got Mario kart. The kid was telling me pokopia was really good, and asked if I ever played Mario kart. So I told him the last time I played that was on the Nintendo 64 in like 1999 when I was about his age
The kid thinks for a bit, and goes “oh wow, I didn’t know you were an old lady!”
Ahahaha
In a way he kinda complimented you! You don’t look or seem old, at least 😆
Yeah, it’s sort of a compliment I guess.
Old meaning experienced gamer!
My kids keep asking me if I played the same games when I was their age (Mario Odyssey, Sonic and Mario at the Olympics, Ori and the Blind Forest, etc). I keep telling them that I played other sonic and Mario games, but these specific ones didn’t exist back then. They’re still confused about WTF sort of ancient historical time that was. Same with their Android tablets and asking me if I had one as a kid.
Similarly, I heard a kid call the Xbox 360 “vintage” the other day. I started to argue that it’s not that old. It only released in… (Checks release date)… 2005? Oh shit it’s over 20 years old. That’s the same as child-me considering the NES vintage when I was playing my PS1.
The PS1 came out 10 years after the NES not 20. So you considering the NES vintage in the latter half of the 90s would be like considering the PS1 vintage when the Xbox 360 came out.
Or more recently, thinking the Switch is vintage
Ha. Similarly, I was at a big music festival a few years ago, taking to a random 20- something dude. I mentioned which bands I was there to see and he just yelled “YOU’RE OOOLD!” at me.
Snoop and Eminem are grandparents.
Ugh, okay, that hurt
About 15 years ago I started hearing Nirvana on classic rock stations.
A few years ago I started to hear “Guns n’ Roses” songs in the local supermarket (think Walmart but in France). I almost vomit.
I remember Modest Mouse getting big and thinking at the time that it was for the generation after me. Just a few years ago I heard Float On in the grocery store. Real circle of life moment.
That all my fun symptoms are “just peri menopause” FML
Do you have a moment to talk about our Lord and Savior, HRT?
I paid a couple kids to shovel my sidewalk. That was the moment I knew I was old.
With age came wisdom
And back pain.
And cash.
you, writing that 2004 is 22 years ago
My 20th high school reunion is coming up…
I finally really realized both that I am old and that I am mortal after both my parents died.
Got something you want to do? Get cracking.
The Xbox 360 will be old enough to drink in a couple months.
