Which CW wins out if you can only pick one. Meat or HP?
Shout out to those poor souls in here that didn’t know the food is made by slaves who canonically LOVE their “jobs”
and become listless and broke when they’re set free
Can’t the wizards just summon unlimited food and drink? Like what kind of powers do these silly kids have if they can’t even do the shit a basic first circle mage can do in D&D?
In Rowling’s world, magic is subservient to capitalism. That’s not an exaggeration, there are “natural laws of magic” that say magic can’t create money, food or shelter, presumably as a way of explaining why poverty is still a thing. She needed the Weasleys to be poor for the jokes.
The food is made by enslaved elves
And then teleported directly onto the table, giving the illusion of magical provenance and accidentally providing a hilariously pointed depiction of commodity fetishism
What a hackjob writer she is.
In absolutely no fairness to Jujutsu Kaisen Rowling, she probably hadn’t come up with the enslaved house elves in the first book, they only come up in the second and then are retroactively explained to be responsible for the kitchen (and maybe some other tasks?) at the school. So she’s a hack definitely she had no plan when writing any of the first four-or-so books but retconned and added so many
world building elements and plot points as she continued to write.I think the podcast I remember hearing this first on was the Shrieking Shack podcast or something I think it was called? I’ll try to remember the name
Ayup. Shrieking Shack podcast
Kind of? It’s explicitly stated that magic cannot make food from thin air. However, they apparently can multiply it, teleport it if they know the location of it, or cook with magic.
It’s also shown that Mrs. Weasley can conjure food, I believe she creates sauce with her wand. So it’s just BS.
Having plentiful and high quality school meals was deemed too far fetched for modern audiences
That’s such a weird choice. It’s supposed to be opulent. The first book especially is very much about the “rags to riches” fantasy that Harry goes through in the first act, and the Hogwarts feast is part of that. The book is not subtle about this.
Yeah this is kind of fascinating. There’s no way I’m watching this but I need big joel or somebody to suffer for me cause I need to know if this is part of a broader theme.
One aspect I actually liked about the Harry Potter films is they did a good job designing Hogwarts. It captured the whimsy of a fantasy Wizard school very well.
Another commenter pointed it out first, but the first book is very much a rags-to-riches story. Harry goes from eating table scraps in a small closet to living in extraordinary opulence. Thrifted clothes that don’t fit to sleeping in a silk and velvet bed. The movie set designers went fucking crazy and it was the right call.
Yeah I never read the books but even I got kind of pumped at the first film. You do really feel for Harry, going from being surrounded by the most awful British pigs ever to getting to play around in a castle in the Scottish Highlands and getting to ride brooms and shit. Ultimate kid fantasy.
if this is real, why on earth do they have a tray? i thought purpose of the kitchen dungeon slaves was they can transport food seamlessly
I just watched the trailer, and what’s baffling is that in the first scene in the Great Hall, the food appears on the table magically as it does in the books (albeit with some superfluous jumping), and all the kids have is their individual plates and utensils…but in the next Great Hall scene (which is where the screencap comes from) they’ve got trays, and you even see someone walking with a tray which does imply some sort of buffet setup. Very strange.
maybe they are doing away with elves in hogwarts, some sort of woke remnant climbing in
it’s not structurally important to the story after all, or at least in structure that makes it look non-shitI found YouTube links in your comment. Here are links to the same videos on alternative frontends that protect your privacy:

…I guess you don’t want to eat directly of the table?
y tho? is introducing banana into a shot that important? (also implies international trading with ecuador)
there should be a content warning for harry potter but lol.
and meat
frugalium austeriosa
Sorry kids, gotta up the budget for magic cops and magic NATO.
read any other book
The LeGuin quote about how every set of rulers is destined to disgrace themselves in every way before their fall, but applied specifically to Harry Potter. The Harries Potter will continue, every Iteration worse and worse until collapse.
They’ll read Gambo
honestly a huge step up and probably a step too far for most of em
I suggest Hyperion
That was actually one of the few sci fi series I read when I was younger, but in retrospect the Endymion books gets a little sus with Aenea’s relationship with Raul and how he does some wibbly wobbly time skip to make their age difference less eyebrow raising. I learned in the last few years that Dan Simmons taught middle school and that set off some alarm bells. But I would probably still recommend them with that caveat, has a lot of cool concepts and I loved imagining the organic dyson sphere.
It does get a bit odd at the end. Although mommy deathbot lady can stamp on me if she likes…
I’ll spray myself.

I forgot about the Terminator that chases them and wasn’t thrilled with Aenea’s ending as space Jesus.

Please prefix the title with [CW: Meat]
Let me guess. In this reboot the Dursleys are buff chads and wizards too, Draco Malfoy is going to be the REAL protagonist, and the death eaters will be 100% in the right so as not to offend modern audiences?
One of those generic “romantasy” novels, but it’s a contemporary fiction with frantasy thrown in and the bland cishet white couple has to deal with asshat insurance policy.
…Idk why I specified “asshat insurance policy”, all insurance companies are asshats!
Please put a CW on this for meat thank you
They added it
