Since we recently watched a film where people talked about ‘The King & I’, we kinda need to see what all the fuss is about, so for today’s Hairy Harmonies we have TWO films about Thailand (then Siam) around the reign of Mongkut, the fourth king of Siam from the Chakri dynasty, titled Rama IV. He reigned from 1851 until his death in 1868 at age 63.
The Siam Renaissance/Tawipop/ ทวิภพ (2004)
2h 23min 17sec
Thai/French/English with hardcoded English subtitles EXCEPT for the English dialog.
This movie was the 2nd adaptation of the 1986 source novel, Thawiphop. While not a commercial success (perhaps it’d have done better if they’d cut out 1/2 hour of lingering on the star), it is noted for sparking modern interest in discussing Thai idedity. Synopsis: Maneechan, a diplomat investigating recently uncovered documents in France concerning ancient Thailand, learns the story behind them first-hand as she travels back in time through a mirror.
The King and I (1956)
2h 13min 14sec
English with English subtitles
The 1944 novel Anna and the King of Siam by Margaret Landon was based on memoirs written by Anna Leonowens, who became school teacher to the children of King Mongkut of Siam in the early 1860s. Leonowens’ stories were autobiographical, although various elements of them have been called into question. From this, we get a Rogers and Hammerstein musical! Plus, there’s Deborah Kerr, Rita Moreno, and Yul Brynner! Wow!
Because these flicks are sooo long, we will be using Blorptube at 3:00pm EST/8:00pm UTC:
https://blorp.bot.nu/o/visual_cuisine
… but if you skip the first 1/2 hour of Tawipop, we can sum up the start for late-comers very quickly.
It is recommended to use a vpn for blorptube and any peertube.

Is there a rule that if you’re making a movie about the reign of Mongkut, your movie MUST be over 2 hours long? Can we revoke that rule? Everyone in the U.S. will be at work when we start today’s Hairy Harmonies with:
- The Siam Renaissance/Tawipop/ ทวิภพ (2004) at 3:00pm EST/8:00pm UTC.
Hopefully some people will be available for the Rogers & Hammerstein musical extravaganza:
- The King and I (1956) at 5:30pm EST/10:30pm UTC.

The Saim Renaissance has wrapped. Now that we’ve got some context, it is time for one of the all-time best musicals that glosses past all the politics and gets straight to fanciful music and ‘exotic’ imagery!
The King and I with Yul Brenner starts in 5 minutes!

Using an image from either movie would have been an acceptable option. Posting this with no image would’ve also been an acceptable option. Why tarnish this post with this detestable slop?
Camden uses GenAI pictures of hairy or furry animals as apparent branding for the “Hairy Harmonies” name. I was bothered by the pictures when xe first showed them off, too, but I kept quiet because I figured that other people’s branding wasn’t my call, and Camden, who is apparently 60+ years old, probably had a different relationship to GenAI than young people tend to have, anyways.
In hindsight, though, if I was bothered by it I should’ve said something, or maybe even offered human-made alternatives. Blorptube’s culture around GenAI more broadly is something that’s bothered me for a long time, even if that discomfort is a bit hypocritical when I have myself regularly used Retrieval-based Voice Conversion.
Thank you for being open minded. If you and/or @loaExMachina@hexbear.net are interested, the slop is meant to be an irritant for the ‘hairy’ part of harmonies. The concept is to pair two movies that have something in common but also have issues, be they disturbing subject matter (such as colonialism, sexism, murders or triggering content), bad excution, or poor taste. It felt appropriate to me that a slop icon would reflect the idea that even though there is always a reason I think the movies are worth seeing, there is probably something cringe-y in at least one of the set. For example, this week’s ‘The King and I’ is so offensive and belittling of the King that it was banned in Thailand. Sure, Brits might think Siam is an exotic fantasy land, but it doesn’t play that way back home, so I paired it with another movie from Thailand related to the same time.
To make an icon as hairy as possible, I generated a bunch of potential icons, and picked the least-cute/most-ugly result. If it really really bothers people I am happy to defer to the group consenus. My initial icon was a take on the hairy ball problem wherein you can’t ‘comb’ fur in one direction over a sphere. As you can see, it is delightfully primitive, but I worried it implicitly required that at least one movie be musical:

P.S. Next week I plan on showing ‘dumb blondes’.
I see, that’s an interesting idea.
