I liked it. It was funny and entertaining. I saw all the hate and outrage as a bunch of basement dwellers upset all their pee bottles were full.
On a meta level it was also pretty funny how towards the second half of the series, the underlying antagonists of the show turned out to be basically woman hating incels, and that seemed to be where a lot of the backlash to the show had been coming from online.

Very much so, but they definitely hung a massive lantern on it, with She-Hulk using her meta-powers (much like Deadpool, but different) to change the script, literally going into the writers room, and a bunch of self-deprecating jokes from the writers ensues. (Spoilers, obviously)
It was awesome for the same reason a lot of people hated it:
It was a massive tone shift.
So people who already had Marvel fatigue loved it. People that just wanted the same thing as every other Marvel show were disappointed, and they were used to being exclusively catered to by marvel, so they took it personally.
Like, if a teenage boy in jr high didn’t like She-Hulk, no one should be surprised. They weren’t the target audience.
A grown adult that wouldn’t stop bitching about, are just a loud minority
I saw all the hate and outrage as a bunch of basement dwellers upset all their pee bottles were full.
That’s a bingo!
She-Hulk was fantastic. It captured the ridiculousness of the comics, balancing satire with action and some fairly decent CGI. It wasn’t perfect, and I’m not going to defend the twerking except to say that it made me laugh the first time I saw it because it was unexpected. Tim Roth was great, Madisynn and Wong could be its own series, and the red-pill incel cult was topical.
Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but you won’t convince me that a large percentage of the people stomping on the show are mad about being portrayed in the show. Some criticisms are valid, and I get why someone expecting an action adventure were disappointed to see a self-referential legal satire and dating drama that breaks the fourth wall. But there were too many people gleefully blaming the show’s shortcomings on “going woke” or “attacking conservative men.”
There are also a lot of critics who are simply tired of the oversaturated comic show markets, and torching the show was excellent for clicks and engagement (in large part due to the glee I just mentioned).
But there were too many people gleefully blaming the show’s shortcomings on “going woke” or “attacking conservative men.”
This is a shame because the world desperately needs conservative men to be mercilessly made fun of or we are doomed.
It would be easier if they didn’t have money on their side
Madisynn and Wong is so funny, it makes the rest of the show worth it. Also the scene with Daredevil doing the walk of shame barefoot in his costume after sleeping with Jennifer.
Tim Roth was friggin’ amazing! Those hilarious motivational posters he had everywhere. “Today is today”, wonderful.
I’m glad they didn’t stick with the comics for Brave New World and have Red Hulk assassinate Abomination. I hope we get more rehabilitated Roth.
She-Hulk, Wonder Man, Moon Knight, Hawkeye (Kate Bishop version) in West Coast Avengers. Love to see it!
I liked She-Hulk, a lot.
I suspect if it had come out pre-Endgame that audiences would have eaten it up. It suffered from the post-Endgame slump that most of the MCU went through.
Granted there are definitely some stinkers in Phase 4 and Phase 5, but everything that came after Endgame just felt lacking because everyone, and I mean everyone got sensory overload from seeing Cap wield Mjolnir.
The superhero movie fatigue after Endgame has really put a stink on a lot of good content.
The big problem after Endgame was that Marvel stopped building towards anything. We lost the “it’s all connected” theme. Plots seemed to vary between “I got snapped for 5 years and it made me sad” vs. “I didn’t get snapped and it made me sad.”
It has been a long time since “fans” of a franchise: Marvel, Star Wars, Star Trek, have actually been fans of the media they complain about constantly.
Negative reactions get a bigger share of views online, and there is an industry of people who make money off claiming that the latest popular thing marks the end of one media franchise or another. Couple this with the increasingly open misogyny and homophobia in a lot of critical reactions, and I start to wonder why these media companies even care what the online reaction is anymore.
Clearly the general audience didn’t buy into the “She-Hulk hates men and is just a rip-off of the wholly original male Hulk” shtick. It was a fun show. It had some moments that didn’t work for me, but then the show wasn’t made explicitly for me.
Good show at the beginning but they completely dialed in the last couple episodes and it came off as lazy and not respecting the viewer’s time.
I think you mean ‘phoned in’, dialed in would mean they nailed it
It happens constantly on Lemmy, and I think it might be because it’s less American centric.
Even if someone speaks fluent English, idioms dont translate well. And often get tossed in where they just don’t make any logical sense, because the speaker only learned from hearing/seeing it, but never had it explained.
Like any true American, I learned that from cartoons.

Eventually tho, idioms will be a way to pick out chatbots, and I am fully ready for a global patois of idioms and memes to escape automated surveillance like old times Cockneys.
Hey, who are you calling an idiom?

Wild. I literally just watched the episode with that quote in it yesterday.
I watched it this past weekend! At an episode or two a day I should be through my 6th or 7th rewatch by the end of the year :)
Such a good show.
I don’t think it was phoned in at the end. I think they tried something wildly different and it didn’t land as well as it could have. But they absolutely tried something.
Oh man, I watched through this a few times and really enjoyed it. Hell, I’d go for another round if I didn’t unsub from the big fat D+
Let She-Hulk and Deadpool meet on screen!
I feel like the show was largely successful because it rage baited the audience that hated it, and let the people that liked that join in on the laughter.
She hulk aside, I do think there is a discussion to be had about appeasing new fans vs appeasing old fans of any given fiction.
I genuinely think they could have written She Hulk in a way that appealed to both audiences, but chose the low hanging fruit because that was the safer move profit wise.
Its good to see that most people like this show. I thought it was a balst.
Your cousin reveals that he, a brilliant scientist, and the only other person to ever be affected by the Hulk condition that you’ve just been inflicted with, has been studying and learning how to deal with it for the past 15 years on both a personal and scientific level, and he offers to share what he’s learned.
As She-Hulk, do you:
-
Respect the Hulk as a teacher in light of his scientific expertise and lived experience?
-
Realize that this Hulk stuff works differently for you, but that your cousin has been suffering alone for a decade and a half, and empathize with him and hang out for a bit to keep him company, understanding that society may one day fear you as a monster too?
-
Make fun of everything he tries to teach you, tell him you already know how to handle anger because you’re a woman, call him a dumb idiot loser, and immediately leave to go back to your job as a lawyer?
The show was entirely about cheap Twitter dunks and triggering chuds, rather than about interesting plots or believable characters. It’s really disappointing because some of her comics were incredible.
A superhero with an ego? Crazy! Everyone hates that.
Yeah, actually. I don’t like egotistical characters especially when their toxic behavior is depicted as something to be celebrated. Like the message was essentially, “therapy is for weak losers.”
I found her to be a very one dimensional #girlboss, and I expect more from a show than pissing off the people I hate.
Did you watch the show? Her ego was actually a problem for her. She never learned to manage her anger and it shows.
Actually, a lot of heroes have short term moments where their ego appears to be a virtue before backfiring. That’s a pretty common trope.
I dropped it after three episodes.
I suppose I could consider giving it another shot in that case, if the tone changes.
The tone doesn’t change. But the ego kinda like Tony Stark (or Thor, or Doctor Strange, etc). The ego is there and it’s part of the character. Sometimes it blows up. Idk, I’d say you don’t need to finish it if you didn’t like it. But her attitude isn’t really different than with other characters.
Tbh I’m not really a fan of Tony Stark for similar reasons.
She-Hulk has gone through a lot of iterations, and in the comics sometimes serves as a foil to Iron Man, from their first meeting in the original run. While she tends to be impulsive and unrestrained, I don’t generally read her as egotistical or arrogant.
The Dan Slott comics are some of my favorite because they play with the duality of the character, switching between She-Hulk and Jennifer Walters and exploring the strengths and weaknesses of each side, while also doing a lot of fun world-building and exploring creative legal questions.
But the show, honestly it just came across to me like the main appeal is that chuds don’t like it and get owned in it. Which is cool and all, but if that’s the only thing going for it, it’s not really saying anything interesting or being fun to watch. It’s not difficult to piss of chuds or own them. I could just follow some reply guy (or reply girl?) on Twitter and get that. There’s a difference between agreeing with a piece of media and it being good.
Huh, I didn’t know ML had branched out from tankies to incels. Interesting.
Presenting a crayon drawing reading “incels are bad” to the National Portrait Gallery and calling them incels when they refuse to frame it.
Wah wah wah. You might as well have directly quoted the entire incel-manosphere rant about She-Hulk. I only left you unblocked long enough to see what kind of weak-ass retort you’d pull out of your unshowered/unlaid ass. Bye!
Lol.
-
I never understood the appeal - it had some good jokes but they got tired fast, some great physical comedy until it was too predictable . Whatever they did to develop the character, I just felt no connection. But I probably wanted another action series so I’m the wrong audience
But that just meant I mostly ignored it
I thought the show started extremely well, just kind of fell apart at the end. I would have liked to have seen more in the courtroom really.
Same here. The idea of having her defend superheroes/villains for things like accidentally opening a portal to hell or creating a small-scale time paradox is a super fun concept. Regular lawyer shows have been done to death but a superpower lawyer show brings endless new possibilities and dilemmas.
I thought it was okay.
My biggest beef was that they already had a really badass woman lawyer in the MCU, Carrie Moss as Jeri Hogarth. She would have been a thousand times better as the big boss.
Second, I didn’t like the CGI. They should have gone with a green actor playing the role. Jameela Jamil would have eaten that role alive.
Huge upvote for Jeri Hogarth! Trinity kicks ass no matter what role she’s cast in …. Ok maybe not The Acolyte but she deserved a better fate
In my head script, She Hulk gets beaten up by Jessica Jones, shown up by Jeri Hogarth, and schooled in super hero etiquette by Foggy Nelson.
By the time she faces off with the Abomination she’s truly ready to hulk out.
Now that’s an episode I’d want to see. She-hulk can be the foil or sidekick to the real heroes. Or she can repress anger enough to hulk out, lose control like Bruce banner, and start to become interesting
imho John Byrne did the best She Hulk run back in the day.
He’s still around, and should be the one writing this.
The problem with the character is that without a single book or main creator, she gets shoehorned in wherever. In the last run of Avengers I read they had made her a female Bruce Banner with lessened intelligence and more rage.
I loved it, and all my friends who consume capeshit agreed. Marvel needs more shows thah feel like shows instead of sliced up movies or miniseries.
