There’s another circle of hell that is government websites. I literally had to spend minutes each time solving 10 difficult capchas every time I want to sign in to the French Visa website. It also clears your session after a few mins of inactivity or when just browsing something else and you have to do the entire processes again. So imagine spending time to fill complex forms and then trying to click next only to be signed off and have to do the entire thing again

Yea that’s true. You also have to wait ages to get an appointment. You pay for the appointment and for the administrative fee, and do tons of paperwork that may take months and cost more money and most likely they wouldn’t give the Visa anyway. Legal immigration from developing countries is hell and people wonder why some just choose to go the illegal route.
If there’s no consistent pressure to make it user friendly, then there’s very little difference between that and devs making things intentionally obscure. And government websites need all work on them to have funds appropriated before any work can be done. So the feedback cycle ends up being abysmal because it’s so slow and unresponsive. Making a data-backed design like that is difficult if not impossible.

I sympathise with the need to implement Anubis or other “checking ur browser” measures given the wave of scraper bots nowadays. Being a relatively small site like The Cutting Room Floor and having your server costs blown out by Claude or w/e.

Anubis can also be bypassed just fine by a bot. The main thing it does is increase load on the bot runners.

I feel lucky that the website I care about the most, dynasty scans, loads substantially faster than it used to a few years ago. Still slower than it should be though. Hopefully they will adopt jxl or something to improve the speed.
