I have been requested to work from home tomorrow since our IT manager “has to” wipe my laptop and install Windows 11. I am happy to work from my Linux Gaming PC at least for one day before having to face this abyss of idiocy.
Wtf are you talking about? Take the day off. You don’t have a computer to work while IT is working on it.
I work from home at least one day a week.
At far as you company knows you don’t own a computer.
to be frank, i also work from home and my work computer runs a propietary linux-distro and never have i seen so fucked-up distro where simple updating takes one hour and launching a web browser takes up to five minutes and at worst two reboots.
Can you give us more details on this cursed distro?
Temple-OS
And the company is unable to provide you with a spare?
I’d show up with a good book instead.
i did that every day back on covid. pretty great.
we should revolt harder against this rto to save real estate money interests bullshit.
“The instrument (the telescreen, it was called) could be dimmed, but there was no way of shutting it off completely” (1984).
“The telescreen received and transmitted simultaneously. Any sound that Winston made, above the level of a very low whisper, would be picked up by it; moreover, so long as he remained within the field of vision which the metal plaque commanded, he could be seen as well as heard. There was of course no way of knowing whether you were being watched at any given moment.”

The Party only wished it had AI.
The lack of a UI “shutdown” option has never prevented me from turning off a computer.
It has been safe to force off a PC for the last 2 decades, now that we have power switches that take time to force the computer off, instead of just a single press.
And my dad said chewing through cables would never pay off.
After they worked so hard breaking their arm to pat themselves on the back for finally making “Update and shut down” work right.
Ha! Now I know why for the last two days my work laptop keeps restarting after I select shutdown. Absolute clownshow.
For years, my windows 10 PC will turn itself on hours after I turn it off. It’s some Microsoft service that does it. Once I realize it’s happening, I turn it off and say fuck you Microsoft. Without fail, within 6-12 months some update turns it back on and it happens again.
They already removed the ability to take the battery out of electronics, especially ones with the ability to record audio and visual I suspect.
Why did all of the manufacturers decide to prevent the battery from being detatchable at the same time? It almost has to be pressure from government no? There is no seeming legitimate reason they should change it as such.
So if it won’t turn off like in this article, there is no way to force it to. If hackers are in there there is no way to stop them in their tracks, you have to ask for permission from the device’s controls that could be interfered with.
I have seen phones that were like this, no physical buttons to force a restart even, you need a screen touch button to finish the restart, and the screen stops responding.

I think this has less to do with government surveillance and much, much more to do with simple corporate greed.
If you can’t replace the battery in your device, then your only choice is to buy a new one when the battery inevitably dies. Planned obsolescence in the age of portable tech.
They wanted to make the phones thinner and also sell replacement phones sooner. Blame Apple.
It’s by design so the AI can continue to listen and plot.
They fixed this like a week ago. It happened, but it’s old news and it’s fearmongering at this point.
There is a lot of bullshit around AI, even vis a vis Microslop (sorry, Microsoft… guess I adopted the new name, too), but this is reaching.
Wait it’s malware?
Always has been.
AI can’t stop me from turning off my survey protector. Check mate assholes.
