When I first saw “GeForce Now” that’s exactly what I imagined. Building a market for cloud computation. “Just own the display, we will rent you the brain for it”. Currently they are choking the market with orders for ram that does not exist, paid with money that does not currently exists and the output of this situation is that prices go up artificially which will eventually drive the users exactly in a scenario where they will rent out computing power “for cheap” to play that latest game for 2-3 hours.

This is crazy because I bought 64 gb ram for like 130 in July of 2025.
Now it’s 530 for the same exact brand.
I’m kicking myself so hard right now. I went in and upgraded my PC when word of tarrifs were coming back in 2024 but decided to chill on ram because the prices were still low and I felt I had enough. I have 16gb of DDR5 and my rig feels like it’s chugging with newer software.
I should’ve bit the bullet and future proofed with a 64gb set up. My ass decided to buy a house instead 😮💨

Dude 2 years ago I built my first PC in a minute and last year built one for wifey (was running a rx580, ddr3 ram and fx6300 that I was milking as long as I could, built my rig and wife used that one till she had me build a better one on ddr3 ram and pcie 4.0 mobo etc) and didn’t think it was a great time to build because of prices being all over but now I’m just glad I didn’t wait any longer!
I upgraded from an fx6300 to a Ryzen R5 1600 when they launched, and that was mind blowing. I can’t imagine what going from an fx6300 to an R5 in 2025 would feel like. That processor has been released 13 years before you upgrade, that’s impressive.

the problem with data center hardware is that they are often bespoke and nowadays can’t be reused in a consumer context. Think about those headless GPUs, they probably making these RAM modules with a different interface.
They will just be e-waste instead of having the possibility of being surplus.
Those headless GPUs are great for simulation work in blender and other creative tools. I’d love an opportunity to buy a good used one on the cheap.
The modules yes, but ram is bought on the chip level. If the modules are never built, the chips can be reused in normal dimms.

I only watched a playthrough to be honest, because the game wasn’t available for my pc and the gameplay seemed kinda outdated, but fuck yeah! The story and voice work really rocked! I loved it as well. Don’t get me started on OST. Quite the movie material in my opinion.

AS long AS you dont plan on selling your Ram I would still ask why you need so much RAM (if youre not running a lot if AI locally)
I installed 64GB when I built my current rig five years ago, because I do (or, did) graphic design for a living and Photoshop will use all the RAM you can throw at it. I routinely worked on files in the 10GB size range, and sometimes larger. The RAM makes a big difference in how long filters take to render on such large image layers–from minutes, down to seconds.
I’m a software architect. I work with large amounts of data. And a sizeable RAM disk is generally useful for many purposes. And yes, I also run AI locally, though that’s what my RTX 4090 is for.
I really wanted to build an AI PC but just kept being busy and kept telling myself that since prices always drop that I’m just wasting my money by doing it.

You can still buy the Framework Strix Halo board (with 128GB RAM) for $2k. For now.
I have a 3090, yet I’m still seriously considering it. The CPU itself is an engineering marvel, not to speak of the ridiculously fast RAM and IGP.
Only caveat is you better be a Python/Linux person. As you will be building forks and beating your head against the screen to get the setup working right.

I saw it coming when Trump got reelected and wanted to setup tariffs. So I upgraded all my PCs before he took office and I am glad I did. Can easily last 5 more years.
I mean I have 16 and 8 in graphics card, I have never used more than half my RAM gaming, maybe you don’t NEED that much RAM.

Oh, there can be all kinds of uses.
For example, I own an LTO tape drive. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get the IBM drivers to compile on my particular flavor of Linux, but I do have a dual boot system.
Now, Windows is a shitty, shitty OS that I only boot up when I really need to. It interferes with all kinds of stuff in ways I hate, for example - copying files. It just refuses to read large files in a continuous, reliable data stream without any interruptions from my SSD when backing them up to tape. This causes the LTO drive to slow down, speed up, rewind, which is not a good thing because it causes additional wear on the tape.
Fix: Create a large RAM drive, copy files to RAM drive, run backup with RAM drive as source.
Just throw that in a omv server, idk what drive you have but it should be supported, do whatever works for you though
IBM stopped their support for LTFS, unfortunately. Which I kinda want to use despite all the drawbacks. And well, the RAM disk workaround does the trick, so there’s not enough pain to compel me into investing more time into the issue.
Making games often makes it nice to have 32gb

Yea, the 2012 build was a 3770k with 16 gb ram, multiple SSDs, a GTX680, etc. So it was a pretty fast machine back in the day.
I upgraded the video card and SSD drives several times, just didn’t have the budget to replace it all at once for a long time.
That processor was nice overclocked for a while so I am not surprised.

To be clear, that doesn’t mean AI is going away. It just means no one is actually going to pay for AI models anymore because open-weight free models will be extremely cheap and powerful.
It also means that AI in places where it brings nothing and in many cases makes the product actually worse will disappear
How is anyone going to run those powerful models locally once the necessary hardware is unaffordable/unobtainable?
No one is paying for AI because no one wants it to begin with.
In this scenario, you have a number of these AI companies contributing to the hoarding having their equipment handled through ‘asset recovery’, which means that at least companies that can drive 15kw to a system and water cooling will probably get them on the cheap and run it on their premise, or in a colo. Maybe some of those parts will trickle down, but admittedly a good chunk of the stuff is hard to accommodate in a residential setting.
Longer term, the hardware becomes obtainable as supply chains re-calibrate back to identcal or more close solutions. Ten years ago, a datacenter GPU was likely to be same hardware as consumer, but with a different thermal solution, firmware, and the video ports unpopulated. The AI rush has made them shift to exotic packaging so they can have absurdly unreasonable wattage in small places that doesn’t work in home settings. I anticipate a swing back that way eventually.
I really hope so but I can’t help but to think that they are going to drag it for as long as possible, because no matter how bad the situation is for the common folk, they are still going to make a profit off of it.

With people saying “people using AI will replace people not using AI”.
And the reason for that is not because people using AI will produce better work, but because AI usage will be preferred over usable output.And because the flow of money is such that all those having money can easily choose to give most of it to AI users[1] while non-AI users don’t have the same ability once most providers turn to AI use.
Now as long as you get the Governments on board (they are already buying up GPUs too) you can get all taxes into AI use, hence starving the non-AI market of ability to procure computing hardware (or anything else to work on) and that is how you get AI supremacy without providing anything better.
with the only exception being base material products like agricultural produce, which has a much lower margin and their costs again go to AI users ↩︎

While I was actually looking for someone to break my model with a better one with better info, this is a pretty useless argument.
To get money, you need to:
- make some half-baked product with chutzpah
- Use charisma to get others to vibe with it on a social media platform
- this is easy if you know how to do the social acting that “normies” do
- Appeal to the ones in power, while convincing them that you used AI to make it, will be using more AI and will do some subscription stuff
- Find a way to inherit Venture Capital.
The market can remain irrational longer than you can remain solvent.
Note that the mantra doesn’t say the market can stay irrational, it’s just a warning that if you are predicting when irrational failure will produce the expected results, you can be in for a bad time. So if someone is thinking about shorting a bunch of the heaviest bubble stocks and expecting to win, well, they can get screwed as the bubble sustains long enough to screw them and then pop.
