I live in Japan and bamboo is a giant pain in my ass. It will spread out-of-control and isn’t going to be a big deal to the datacenter folks anyway.

That is very heavily maintained. Along one side of my property, they’re only a few cm apart with a different variety of small, thin bamboo filling every crack it can find. It encroaches into the rest of my property and requires weekly maintenance in the warm months to keep back. If I did nothing, my whole property would just be an impassible jungle within a couple of years.

He probably didn’t even zoom in on it and immediately called BS assuming it was heavily maintained due to the spacing, I don’t think you can call that a “gotcha”

What was I supposed to do? Say look at it closely? That was my whole point, people just assume photos are real. It is very concerning, in the near future, we won’t be able tell if any photo or video is real at all. It will be indistinguishable.

This sign is generated. Check the bottom of the M in “bamboo”, the leaves on the diagram, and the weird spot left of the last line.

Are you joking? The original sign was metallic, hence the reflection behind “service” in the first line and the M you mentioned. I don’t see anything wrong with the leaves and the “weird spot” is a leave symbol

even that won’t have the impact of a drone with explosives

really too much work and won’t have much of an impact, we need to somehow let meth-heads with stolen f-150s and a battery operated sawzall know that there;s more copper and precious metal in there than a 1000 catalytic converters.

If left to grow unchecked bamboo roots can eventually damage foundations. It’s a highly invasive plant that is difficult to eradicate, and its root systems are extremely strong. When we bought our current house there was a patch of bamboo that the previous owners have planted. Luckily not near the house though. I’m on my third year ripping out stalks of it that continue to appear. If you google something like “ bamboo foundation damage” you can find photos, articles, etc.

The thing is, it mostly takes advantage of cracks in concrete foundations, gaps in stone foundations, etc. The chances of it damaging a modern datacenter foundation is probably very low. And it would likely take decades to cause any significant damage. Assuming the datacenter didn’t just bring in a backhoe and dig it all up by long before it became a serious problem.

Or more likely the datacenter would start systematically applying herbicides.

Herbicides alone aren’t enough to deal with a well established cluster of bamboo. The waxy leaves prevent the plant from absorbing them. To properly kill it you need to cut the bamboo close to the ground then pour herbicide on the cut stems as quickly as possible. Waiting even a few minutes can be too long since healthy bamboo will quickly seal cuts. And with healthy bamboo the root systems are so extensive that this will just cause the roots to send up new stalks in other places. So you need to repeat the process of cutting and applying herbicide multiple times until you no longer see new stalks appearing anywhere.

The stuff is awful, I’ve dug it up before, you really need a machine to drill the roots out doing it by hand is just not efficient enough.

We were lucky enough to have a contractor working here when we first tackled the bamboo patch. He scraped off the first 6” or so of soil with his skid steer. What he dug up was basically a 6 foot square mass of roots…

The water supply too though no? If the water main failed, I imagine they would be able to shut down their systems without damage but not use them much, they typically carry their own pond of water for emergencies as such I believe.

That’s only good enough to give the machines time to come to a safe halted state. For however long it takes to repair the chillers, that facility is a credit on the accounting ledger.

            Accounting language is different.

A debit is incoming while credit is an increase of liability.

Think of the big picture of a credit card. The card backer (bank/credit union) is paying the vendor cash equivalent while crediting you with debt.

I watched a show talking about data centers that are being build in old missile silos with their own cooling systems, power generation, etc. built way underground and it made me very sad. Is that what you really want to protect inside an old missile silo? Gross.

You want to fight a data center nearby that annoys you with its loud generators and invite a grass that will destroy your home within a few years. Well, good luck.

So, shit like this isn’t really helpful without specific addresses to avoid planting bamboo at. Also gps coordinates for sugar and honey disposal areas to avoid… like, let’s make some USEFUL PSA’s please

    Solid Solarpunk Shit.

And No, it doesn’t matter if it is invasive, after all, is a data center native? Nuke both in the future.
