Picard was of the best, healthiest, and most non-toxic masculine role models in popular culture–a great depiction of how a man can be strong without being a bully and kind without being a pushover. TNG (and Picard in particular) was enormously influential on me growing up, and Patrick Stewart himself seemed like a really good guy off-stage as well. I don’t tend to give a shit about celebrity deaths, but this one sucks.
RIP, the legend. Played Lenin and Picard, my favs.
It is possible to commit no mistakes and still lose. That is not a weakness. That is life.

It hit me a bit already but this quote seriously is giving me tears

It’s maybe the best quote from TNG. Such a great economy of words in that lesson, too.
There are lot of great ones, that is certainly near the top at least.
noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
He will be remembered for Trek but I will keep the flame of Patrick as Lenin alive, as he would want.

YES ty Awoo
“Don’t trust the liberals, they will betray you!” a lesson Comrade Patrick taught me that I have never forgotten.

Lifelong socialist, too. Rip
oh snap, really?
Actual article was paywalled but

Free one:
Stewart was indeed a lifelong socialist, which he credited to his father. He told the Independent in 2009 that he was “an absolute fundamental, emotional socialist” and a lifelong Labour supporter.
He was also vocal in his opposition to Brexit. At the London premiere of Star Trek: Picard in January 2020, Stewart described Brexit as “the saddest, grimmest thing” to have happened to him in his political life.
He also revealed that he had ditched plans to try and gain US citizenship in order to vote against Donald Trump. Speaking on the Star Trek-themed white carpet outside the event in Leicester Square, he said, referring to then-prime minister Boris Johnson: I think we have our own Trump in our country here today, so I am going to be using my vote to try and get rid of him.

Probably more of a radlib demsoc than a socialist as we’d understand the term, but pretty much as good as you can get for a rich celebrity
Oh my god! Is that Wallace Shawn’s theme music?
But generally, yeah, you’re right.
If I ever join Bluesky it will be as The International Voting Socialist.
Ah shit this fucking sucks.
I can’t believe William Shatner outlived him, what the fuck.
Genuinely think William Shatner could become one of the oldest men in the world. If he didn’t have such a long documented career I might believe he was lying about his age for whatever reason.
I just checked he’s 95 lmao what the fuck he looks 80 tops.
He said that the trick to looking younger as you get older is to gain 5-10 pounds a year to keep the skin taut, lol
Also having tons of money for rich people healthcare
There was a pic of him from his 95th birthday and he looks like he could pass for mid to late 60s. Like I said the fact he’s such a big Hollywood name and has been around for so long is pretty much the only reason I haven’t suspected him of being an age fraudster lol.
He was just playing festivals with his metal band last month
His what?
Wait till you hear what Christopher Lee was doing.
His cover of Bohemian Rhapsody is certainly a treat, particularly the bit at around 3.47:

rip kingDespite being 86, I still gasped
The first loss of the core TNG crew and it was the big man himself, almost inverse of the original series where Shatner is almost the last left (him and Takei)
Also Walter Koenig (who played Chekov) died too literally 4 days ago?! WTF
soon it’ll be just wesley…
Wait, really? I thought Walter Koenig had died a long time ago! I wonder who on earth I was thinking of. Huh.
the chekov from the new movies died in an accident
Rarely will I mourn a public figure, let alone someone I’ve never met, let alone actually cry… But it’s legit heart breaking to see him go. Especially in such a painful way like LBD. I’m glad it was short.
Patrick Stewart has asked that you donate to Johns Hopkins Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center Fund and Alzheimer’s Foundation of America Caregiver Resources.

I keep seeing comments that he was a socialist, but these kinds of organizations are oppositional to public, collective funding and decision making around health care and research.
Contrary to “from each according to their ability”, they rely on discretionary donations from individuals/corporations, the largest of whom are overtly using it to evade taxes which would otherwise be distributed according to public policy. The donor economy allows these people to have arbitrary power far exceeding their expertise.
And rather than “to each according to their need”, decisions are made with far less accountability than a state or other public institution would be subject to. In particular, groups who represent different diagnoses are put in the strange situation of competing with one another in popularity contests. Which leads to vast waste of resources on promo, PR and pointless activities which advertise the fundraising projects. And god help you if you have a disease without a big advertising campaign, that wealthy people don’t feel like using a tax shelter.
I suggest if you are feeling a grief that is soothed financially, send it to someone in mutual aid, or put it in your pocket and hand it to the next person who asks you for change on the street.
It has not been a great week for Star Trek fans.
RIP.Wait… Did someone else die?
Walter Koenig
incredible how so few were aware it happened – i wasn’t.
FUCK
Star Trek kept me alive during high school.
Man, I feel they did him so dirty on Star Trek: Picard. It could’ve been much better. Sigh.
I don’t want to criticize him too harshly since he’s dead, but he had a ton of input into the writing of Star Trek: Picard, and it wasn’t for the better.
Might’ve been the Alzheimers? At least I hope he had fun with it
I think he just wasn’t a writer.
No, just his taste. He clearly enjoyed being on Seth MacFarlane’s shows.
Edit: checked MacFarlane’s twitter

MacFarlane’s take on Trek (The Orville) is actually good, unlike Star Trek: Picard.
Nah, I posted above about it, but it’s where he wanted Picard to go since early TNG. He asked the writers to have Picard do more ‘fucking and fighting’ and they wrote the Risa episode under a mandate to get Picard laid. He played the character well but didnt seem to understand the character.
He did himself dirty. Even in early TNG he was bothering producers for Picard to do more ‘fighting and fucking’ and that’s where the Risa episode came from, a mandate to get his character laid. As he gained greater leverage the character drifted further away from what he was. He became Action Hero Guy in the movies, partially at his behest and partially cause the tng movies where kind of a mess. I genuinely cried when I heard that he died, and there are people that I know irl who died and I didnt cry over. But i’m not gonna refrain from criticizing his creative choices regarding star trek because of it either. It is what it is, I never held it against him personally and putting myself in his shoes, I can get where he was coming from. From being a huge trekkie and hearing enough quotes from or about Patrick Stewart, he was sorta half Picard half his character from American Dad. Blunt Talk is an underrated show of his.

Same.
Roddenberry’s work was the first material to shed light on the contradictions and amorality of the liberal moral framework my family and education were coaching me into.
It was the first material to spark the idea for me that a better world is possible.
Patrick Stewart was the face of that, and he turned out to be substantially not awful as an individual, as well.

I wish I really were a Traveler of all of space and time.
29 October, 2026 | Wil Wheaton
It’s only been like ten minutes since I found out, just before it hit the press, so I’m staggered and doing my best to process everything, while my phone is blowing up. There will be wonderful obituaries and reflections from so many people who knew him. I’m going to do my best to write my own, but that’s going to take a little bit.
For now, I want the world to know that Patrick wasn’t just my captain or my castmate; he was my friend and mentor. He made me a better actor, just by being in scenes with me. He never treated me like I was a kid; he always treated me like I was an equal, a fellow artist, at a time when I wasn’t mature enough to understand how precious that was.
I haven’t seen Patrick in a long time, our lives and schedules being what they are, but I thought about him almost every day. He rarely posted in our group chat, but when he did, it always made me smile. He always texted me back when I reached out to him directly, no matter what it was about, and he always — always — made me feel special.
I wish I really were a Traveler of all of space and time, so I could go to him, one final time, and tell him how much he means to me. I think he knew, but still.
There is so much more to say, and it’s going to take me some time to say it. Until then, I loved him, the same way I love the rest of the space family we shared. May his memory be a blessing.

am I wrong or is that final sentence a dogwhistle?
Wheaton has expressed support for both Israel’s [sic] right to exist and the human rights of Palestinians, a stance often described as liberal Zionist framing.
probably.
wil is a slava ukraine guy
Wil is just sooo fucking cringe. Human Funko Pop. Wesely was cooler than him.
as far as i know he’s done right by his stepsons, and his own childhood was fucked up but he should definitely shut up about brands and geopolitics
I dont think he is a particularly bad guy in any stretch, they hired him to do post epusode online stuff for new trek and promotional stuff as well a cameo in the worst season of star trek ever made and then was the only tng cast member not included in the 3rd season. He just strikes me as a shill and a bit of a dork
For all the hate Wesley gets, he at least stood up for a group of Native Americans over being relocated by the Federation, and had no problem sacrificing his career for it. Whereas Wil Wheaton doesn’t get much further than your typical shitlib “both sides” type of fecklessness.
Wesley was mostly fine. He was annoying in the esrly years but the early years were weird.
Hard to imagine why a lifelong socialist might not have met or spoken to this asshole in a long time!
Could you explain the dogwhistle? I don’t recognise anything suspicious
it’s just that I’ve seen that exact phrase used dozens of times by official Isn’traeli twitter accounts when an IOF soldier gets merced
I thought that was sort of a Jewish phrase. I also see “of blessed memory” which is sinilar
ok, that would explain it. another thing the settlers are trying to conflate I suppose

shut up, wesley!

RIP king
Zinda, his eyes red. Darmok on the ocean.

Rest in peace.
Darmok and Jalad at Tanagra.
My own father passed away this year in January. Am I crying because he introduced me to TNG so I am still grieving his death, or because Picard was the one heroic character whom I wish my dad, flawed as he was and we all are, had been more like?
Maybe it’s both.
I’m so sorry for your loss. :hugs:
Thank you. :)
Thinking about it a little more, I think I love Patrick Stewart so much because he didn’t seem to disappoint much when compared to his character of Captain Picard.
He portrayed a character that represented a vision of humanity that showed what was possible for us all. Growing up with that role model, but then seeing how the world actually works was really difficult for me. Humanity was such a big disappointment in reality. So much wasted potential.
Now that he’s gone, reality is just a little harder to face, and our little flame of hope seems to flicker a little more.
