They’re so close to curing T1 diabetes and I’m rooting for them. If I live to see the insulin/diabetes medical device manufacturers go bankrupt I may achieve nirvana

Just a handful of people. I’m not sure about T2 as my T1 ass doesn’t follow any news/research about it specifically, but I do know for certain that they ‘cured’ T1 in a woman using her own stem cells which they turned into islet cells (the insulin producing ones in your pancreas), injected her with them, and her body was still producing its own insulin again/managing hypoglycemia by itself after a year. That case specifically though the woman was already taking immunosuppresants so it is really unclear on if that kind of treatment would actually work in diabetics without our immune systems just going stalin-gun-1stalin-gun-2 to them like it already does to our natural islet producing areas in our pancreases.

I’ve noticed there’s a lot of racism involved too; I recall the media’s initial mockery and skepticism of Cuba when they revealed they’d had success with a lung cancer vaccine, or mockery of Iran in regards to their ability to reverse engineer drones, claiming no one there had the skills for it.

In the IARC system, red meat is classed under 2A: which means it’s probably carcinogenic. There’s a strong link between heavy red meat consumption and bowel cancer compared to people who rarely consume or do not consume red meat. In fact, red meat is the example Wikipedia uses for group 2A.

Burnt food is IARC Group 2B, possibly carcinogenic. Acrylamide created by burning food has shown an increase in cancer in some lab animals but last I read it was inconclusive for humans as its rarely a staple diet for the vast majority of humans so it’s hard to research.

Sorry, maybe I’ve been in too much reddit lately and assumed bad faith but yes. Burnt anything is carcinogenic. I don’t know as much about red meat as compared to other meats but I’d be surprised to find out that it has any health advantages because the usual suspects would be hyping those already.

Cancer (disease) and Individual Liberalism share common destructive traits.

I am oversimplifying a lot, but what I mean is when cells develop maladaptively they can start to reproduce with the only goal being growth and expansion, with no regards for anything else. Kind of like what’s been happening in our Neoliberal world order.

Comparing libs to cancer is however, way too generous and strips away from their agency, which I have no intention of doing, they are not clueless of what the ramification of their actions are, like how a cancer cell might be, they’re far worse than that.

Capitalism as a system is anolygous to a cancer. It has no morality, no consciousness, no realization that its very existence is its own death sentence.

I always find this one interesting. I think Capitalism as en entire system isn’t necessarily cancerous in total. Marx probably didn’t have the vision of cancer we have today, but I think his analogy about the vampire was still better. Capitalism as a system is hard to just call a cancer because it is productive, because its laborers are productive. Capital as cancer in the system is closer, but still not as good. So saying that capital is a vampire, and so capitalism is a society dominated by vampires, is a better analogy. It is dead, but can only keep itself moving and growing by consuming the living (labor). In doing so, it grows and gets more hungry, and continuously needs to balance a need to consume more versus to let the living (labor) produce (so that it can be consumed). Cancer has no such mechanism to protect itself and no desire to stay alive and growing. Capital is mindless but the system gives it interests and mechanisms to act within the system in its own interest.

I guess my point is that cancer as an analogy underestimates capital and the system in which capital functions as the organizer of labor.

Long rant, no real reason I wrote this out except I was kinda bored. Calling it cancer is fine too lol

You’re right and this is why vampire stories originated from the Fear of The Rich/Ruling Class. Capitalists live by sucking the life force out of the working class (labour power) keeping them subjugated. Like vampires.

It’d be cool to be surprised by this, but I kinda think “curing” cancer is nearly a big a fantasy as AGI. What is there to cure? Cells being damaged? Treatment will continue to be refined, sure, but don’t expect to ever see a panacea.

yeah “cancer” is a pattern of cellular behavior and the causes of it are myriad and depend on the type of cell that’s fucking up.

there’s almost certainly never going to be a generic cure or prevention for all cancers. maybe some scifi shit with human cloning and brain transplants but that’s not fixing the cancer in the body that has it.
