Hamas didn’t choose poorly per se; they didn’t even know about the festival and the other places they attacked did have IDF bases that seemed to be the main targets. Now that doesn’t excuse the atrocities committed during October 7th, but save for the hostage taking there’s no evidence any of them were planned by Hamas leadership (which to be clear doesn’t excuse them for not cracking down on said atrocities). At the risk of repeating myself, October 7th did include plenty of war crimes, but it was more targeted than people give it credit for.
